First Quarter Moon in Scorpio ☽ July 24, 2015

The 1st Quarter in Scorpio comes exact on Thursday July 23, 2015 at 10:04 pm MST

Click here to learn about the Moon. Click here to learn about Scorpio.

The First Quarter marks halfway between the new and full moon. The first and last quarter occur when the moon aspects the Sun at a 90 degree angle. (Seen from above, the moon forms a right angle in relation to an invisible line running through the Earth to the sun, hence “square” for the name of this astrological aspect. Here the moon has completed 1/4 of her journey around the earth.) In this particular phase, the Sun in Leo squares the moon in Scorpio. The moon will rise at noon, peak at dusk and set at midnight.

For those who are strongly affected by lunar energy, the quarter moon phases are especially trying. Square aspects are sharp, angular junctions that prompt change. As CafeAstrology notes, the quarter phases feel like a “crisis of consciousness.” We are encouraged now to examine all that was established with the New Moon in Cancer. The waxing moon symbolizes return to total awareness. This is the best time to tweak and improve upon existing strategies. At every full moon we manifest new moon intentions; as such, the week between the first quarter and full moon (July 23 - 31) is quite potent.

We have reached a corner and must choose a new direction. The building energy and excitement you feel is there to inspire you. This phase prompts decisive action, calculated risk-taking and deepened commitment to personal growth. The moon is asking you to gather yourself.

The scorpion domain

I like to imagine each moon cycle as a procession of poignantly themed challenges. Generally speaking, the Leo cycle seeks to empower the individual - freedom of expression is the name of the game. So here we are (already!) at the first stop along the lion path: a seductive, intoxicating encounter with Scorpio, the zodiac’s master of transformation. The First Quarter Moon in Scorpio addresses trust issues as well as power and control struggles. Scorpio and Leo have little in common besides their doggedly fixed nature. Leo is the naive, self-centered, happy-go-lucky child of the zodiac, and Scorpio the dark and brooding introvert with dwindling faith in humanity. Both are amusingly content to be as such! Dialog centers on the following: finding balance between healthy self-appreciation and the constant, inevitable metamorphosis of the ego.

Leo seeks company with direct, straightforward personalities. This is not how Scorpio operates. Moreover, Scorpio is not about to entertain a room full of people, as Leo would have it. Leo fears the scorpion’s complexity, preferring a simple yet playful life. Scorpio, on the other hand, fears letting go, living spontaneously, allowing the Self to be free of cares. The scorpion is easily frustrated by the lion’s insistence on me - Scorpio sees the Self as perpetually evolving. From the Llewellyn Journal:

Leo’s ego … hogs the stage when it can. Scorpio finds that troublesome and wants Leo to do a little honest, inner digging to uncover why it demands so much personal attention and adoration. Always upbeat about itself, the Lion doesn’t feel it needs such psychoanalysis and doesn’t like being investigated. ‘I’ve got nothing to hide. What you see is what you get.’

The First Quarter Moon in Scorpio seeks a path that is not too dark - not too much scorpion suspicion - but not too light either - not too much leonine idealism or unchecked trust in the world; we must be guarded but not closed.

Divine water energy

The First Quarter in Scorpio connects us to water energy, something we are deeply familiar with after a lovely spin through Cancer. However, this transit is more forceful – indeed, Scorpio is a fixed sign. It is interesting to note that Leo is ruled by the Sun, the center of our solar system, and Scorpio by Pluto, the planet farthest from center! With just this metaphor we see how differently these two entities move through life. The purpose of this first quarter moon is rebirth (Scorpio) in our sense of Self and ultimate identity (Leo) - powerful indeed. Imagine the Sun and Pluto stretching their cosmic arms over the vast distance between them, intertwining in some remote asteroid belt. Together they bring about irreversible change. Emotional and psychic energies are at an all-time high. There is a tendency for greater volatility in the form of outbursts and unveiling of secrets.

Scorpio lives cautiously because she is so familiar with the Underworld - she recognizes that at any moment, the shadows within may arise and wreak havoc. She would do well to learn from Leo’s sunny disposition, just as Leo would do well to be more wary, to learn how to read others with more accuracy. I expect that the transition from predominantly Cancer energy to Scorpio will be emotionally trying - deep breaths, fellow stargazers, t’is only a phase. The First Quarter Moon in Scorpio last fell in the beginning of August 2014. Any themes that predominated then will now resurface. The ego is operating in full force, you’ve been warned! Expectations are high - expectations that others will worship and pamper us. Be mindful, stay humble. I suggest meditation near water. Namaste.

First Quarter Moon in Libra ☽ June 24, 2015

The 1st Quarter in Libra comes exact on Wednesday, June 24 at 7:03 am EST

The First Quarter marks halfway between the new and full moon. The first and last quarter occur when the moon aspects the Sun at a 90 degree angle. (Seen from above, the moon forms a right angle in relation to an invisible line running through the Earth to the sun, hence “square” for the name of this astrological aspect. Here the moon has completed 1/4 of her journey around the earth.) In this particular phase, the Sun in Cancer squares the moon in Libra. The moon will rise at noon, peak at dusk and set at midnight.

For those who are strongly affected by lunar energy, the quarter moon phases are especially trying. Square aspects are sharp, angular junctions that prompt change. As CafeAstrology notes, the quarter phases feel like a “crisis of consciousness.” Nearing the full moon is like creeping to the high point of a rollercoaster. Soon all undertakings will be realized and answers to lingering questions brought to the fore. We are encouraged now to examine all that was established with the New Moon in Gemini. The waxing moon symbolizes a return to total awareness. This is the best time to tweak and improve upon existing strategies. At every full moon we manifest new moon intentions; as such, the week between the first quarter and full moon (June 24 – July 1) is quite potent.

We have reached a corner and must choose a new direction. The building energy and excitement you feel is there to inspire you. The first quarter moon prompts decisive action, calculated risk-taking and deepened commitment to personal growth. The moon is asking you to gather yourself.

Diplomatic domain

The First Quarter Moon in Libra represents a conflict between external and internal life. I like to imagine each moon cycle as a procession of poignantly themed challenges. Generally speaking, the Cancer cycle seeks to empower the right brain. So here we are at the first stop along the crab path: a graceful encounter with Libra, classy diplomat of the zodiac realm. Libra, number seven in the wheel, is an auspicious sign with much to offer this world so full of strife and violence. The sign of the scale is associated with fairness, justice, equality and compromise. Let’s harness Libra power to better understand humanity’s capacity for unconditional love.

Cancer is the introverted homebody of the zodiac, and Libra her community-oriented mother, firmly and courageously defending the rights of all. What can Libra teach us to help the crab get out of the heart’s endless well and back to the voice of reason, back to the raw landscape of social reality? Imbalanced Cancers are so distracted by their own intense emotional responses to life that they may be unable to leave their own mindspace and connect properly with others. Libra exercises a rationality that the crab often lacks. If you’re feeling overwhelmed at any point during this transit, visualize the scales of Libra, glittering and golden, resting at perfect equilibrium.

Divine wind energy

The First Quarter in Libra connects us to air energy, something we are deeply familiar with after a lovely spin through Gemini. However, this transit is markedly more centered – indeed, Libra is a cardinal sign. Both Libra and Cancer are ruled by divine feminine planets, Venus and the Moon respectively. The purpose of this first quarter moon is to bring peace and harmony (Libra) to the emotional body (Cancer). Allow the Moon and Venus to work in tandem for you. Together they create a vortex of powerful goddess energy.

Balanced Libra have unmistakable joy for life. They love being around others and are adept at doing so. I expect that the transition from predominantly Gemini energy to easy, breezy Libra will be painless and lovely. This phase is connected to the Last Quarter Moon in Cancer of October 2014. Any themes that predominated then will now resurface. At this time the pull towards peace and harmony in the outside world speaks to our intuition while the occasional desire to stay home and do nothing speaks to the ego. I suggest meditation in an outdoor location with strong wind and/or balancing yoga poses. Namaste.

First Quarter Moon in Virgo ☽ May 25, 2015

The 1st Quarter in Virgo comes exact on Monday, May 25 at 1:19 pm EST

Click here to learn about the Moon. Click here to learn about Virgo.

Here the moon has completed 1/4 of her journey around the earth.) In this particular phase, the Sun in Gemini will square the moon in mutable earth Virgo. The moon will rise at noon, peak at dusk and set at midnight.

This phase is a checkpoint. What aspects of our initiatives have been successful thus far? Where do we need to work harder? Nearing the full moon is like creeping to the high point of a rollercoaster. Soon all undertakings will be fully realized and answers to lingering questions brought to the fore. You are encouraged now to scope out any flaws in the foundation laid with the New Moon in Taurus. Are your ventures built to last? The waxing light of the moon symbolizes a return to total awareness. This is the best time to tweak and improve upon existing plans. What was a lovely idea in theory but failed to manifest smoothly in reality? At every full moon we manifest all new moon intentions, so the week between the first quarter and full moon (May 25 – June 2) is a very powerful time. If you have been diligent, expect to see your ideas come to fruition now.

Squares mean change. We have reached a corner and must choose a new direction. The building energy and excitement you may feel is there to inspire you. The first quarter moon encourages decisive action, calculated risk-taking, networking and deepened commitment to personal growth. The moon is asking you to gather yourself.

Mind versus body

The First Quarter Moon in Virgo represents a conflict between mind and body. I like to imagine each moon cycle as a procession of poignantly themed challenges. Generally speaking, the Gemini cycle seeks to empower the intellect. So here we are at the first stop along the Gemini path: a mystical encounter with the earthy virgin of the zodiac realm. In some ways, Virgo (number 6 in the zodiac) represents a more evolved version of Gemini (number 3). Virgo is associated with work, health, daily routines and details. Let’s harness Virgo power to better understand our mind’s capacity for knowledge and creativity.

Gemini is the thinker of the zodiac, and Virgo his dutiful mother, quietly and persistently patching the tears found in the rippling cosmic fabric of externality. What can Virgo teach us in order to help the twins get out of the mind and back to the hands which work and mend, back to the raw landscape of reality? Yes, both signs have a habit of dwelling, nitpicking and generally getting lost in the mind’s labyrinth. And yet Virgo exercises a ruthless practicality that the twins often lack. Even when she falls into states of neuroticism or over-worrying, the balanced virgin inevitably returns to the surface, again and again.

Divine earth energy

The First Quarter in Virgo reconnects us to divine earth energy, something we are deeply familiar with after a seemingly long and arduous spin through Taurus. However, this transit is markedly more fluid - indeed, it is mercurial. Both Gemini and Virgo are ruled by the planet Mercury. The purpose of this first quarter moon is to examine (Mercury) our communication and mental processes (Gemini) to see where we can improve in work and health-related sectors of life (Virgo). Some examples: quality of relationships with co-workers; general communication in the workplace; personal feelings/mindset towards exercise and nutrition.

Mercurial types such as Geminis and Virgos have unmistakable presence. Perhaps this is the key to the First Quarter in Virgo - cultivating presence. Resist the urge to sink below, as do the twins; stay behind your eyes, carefully and systemically observing the world around you. This phase is connected to the Last Quarter Moon in Gemini of September 2014. Any themes that predominated then will now resurface. At this time the pull towards work, health and daily routine speaks to our intuition while the occasional need to wander/roam/dillydally speaks to the ego. I suggest performing a ritual that involves soil or twisting yoga poses to generate new blood flow in the intestines, ruled by Virgo. Namaste.

First Quarter Moon in Leo ☽ Apr 25, 2015

The 1st Quarter in Leo comes exact on Saturday, April 25 at 7:55 pm EST

The First Quarter marks halfway between the New and Full Moon. The First and Last Quarter occur when the Moon aspects the Sun at a 90 degree angle. (Seen from above, the Moon forms a right angle in relation to an invisible line running through the Earth to the Sun, hence “square” for the name of this astrological aspect. Here the Moon has completed 1/4 of her journey around the Earth.) In this particular phase, the Sun in fixed earth Taurus will square the Moon in fixed fire sign Leo.

You are encouraged now to scope out any flaws in the foundation laid with New Moon #2 in Aries. Are your ventures built to last? The waxing light of the Moon symbolizes a return to total awareness. This is the best time to tweak and improve upon existing plans. At every Full Moon we manifest all New Moon intentions, so the week between the First Quarter and Full Moon (Apr 25 – May 3) is a very powerful time.

This phase falls in fixed signs, meaning that the most attractive path now will be one that fortifies our proverbial compass rose, the foundation we will return to again and again throughout the next astrological year. Our intention now is to “firm up” plans. Now that the Aries cycle is almost over, let’s see which new insights best serve us. What was a lovely idea in theory but failed to manifest smoothly in reality?

Now vs. later

The First Quarter Moon falling in Leo represents a conflict between the joy of the present moment and the reality of the future. I like to imagine each Moon cycle as a procession of poignantly themed challenges. Generally speaking, the Taurus cycle seeks to build and sustain. The bull, unlike the lion, moves slowly and purposefully; she is conservative, efficient and practical. Taurus thrifts and saves for maximum comfort in the long run, but Leo would happily spend all his money and resources at once if it meant having the best time ever RIGHT NOW! From astrologer Bil Tierney:

Both signs form strong attachments to those they trust and respect. They also wish to be seen as trustworthy and honorable in their intentions … Neither sign is devious or underhanded in its approach to getting what it wants. This pairing thus implies honesty, strong integrity, and an inner strength that others can count on in times of need … There’s an obstinate nature here that could perhaps use a few lessons in flexibility, as both signs won’t take no for an answer. Nonetheless, there is an authentic self-expression that indicates a strong backbone and an ability to handle even arduous times with dignified self-composure.

The lion now strikes a pose in the bull’s path as if to ask: is your life majestic, or just boring and safe? Both signs are incredibly stubborn and difficult to persuade of anything much at all. More from Bil Tierney on the Taurus-Leo square:

[F]ixed signs resist altering themselves to accommodate one another … Yet the tremendous resources bottled up in these signs need purposeful release, so life brings on forceful, uncompromising conditions that make this fixed group finally bend and yield to one other. Once they willingly exchange their assets, they find it’s not such a bad thing after all, and wonder why they hadn’t conceded sooner.

Taurus is the cosmic strongwoman of the zodiac, and Leo her pampered son, bounding after luxury and leisure. But like any well-intentioned spirit, Leo wants to make sure that we’re having enough fun and enjoying life to the absolute fullest. So do our plans for the new year include celebration? One last line from astrologer Bil Tierney: “Leo doesn’t care how much its pleasures will cost (in fact, it connotes a higher price tag with greater value). The Lion seeks the best in life that it can afford, since it thinks so highly of itself.”

Leo attempts now to rain sparks on the bull’s earthen kindling. The lion is not satisfied with aspirations that fail to leave room for unbridled passion, followed of course by proper relaxation. The First Quarter reconnects us to divine fire energy – without Leo’s joyful yet insistent thirst for thrill and diversion, it is all too easy to get stuck, mired in thick, heavy earth energy. If you’re feeling lost, remember that underneath it all, what both signs are really seeking is to live the best life possible. From Taurus we learn to survive off of our own inner confidence and self-appreciation; from Leo we learn the importance of genuine compassion and forthright praise for others. Indeed, what we really learn is that it takes incredible courage to live completely in the present moment, detached from all terrestrial doubts, fears and worries.

Expect themes of loyalty, or perhaps loyalty to indulgence, to pop up now. This square connotes a conflict between conservation and excess. Even the imbalanced bull is known to swing wildly between saving and splurging. It’s time to get in touch with how and where we can give more – how do you fend off greed? How do you live up to your responsibility to be generous? This phase is connected to the Last Quarter Moon in Taurus of August 2014. Any themes that predominated then will now resurface. I suggest performing a ritual that involves fire or a heart chakra activation. Namaste.

First Quarter Moon in Cancer ☽ Mar 27, 2015

The 1st Quarter in Cancer comes exact on Friday, Mar 27 at 12:14 pm EST

Click here to learn about the Moon. Click here to learn about Cancer.

You are encouraged now to scope out any flaws in the foundation laid with the Super Solar Eclipse in Aries. Are your ventures built to last? The waxing light of the Moon symbolizes a return to total awareness. This is the best time to tweak and improve upon existing plans. At every Full Moon we manifest all New Moon intentions, so the week between the First Quarter and Full Moon (Mar 27 – Apr 4) is a very powerful time.

This phase falls in cardinal signs, meaning that the most attractive path now will be one that serves as a proverbial compass rose, a foundation that we will return to again and again throughout the next astrological year. Our intention is to initiate. Now that the Piscean cycle is over, let’s reflect to see which spiritual insights we can carry forward. What was a lovely idea in theory but failed to manifest smoothly in reality?

Divine Masculine challenged by the Divine Feminine

The First Quarter Moon falling in Cancer represents a conflict between the Divine Masculine and Divine Feminine. I like to imagine each Moon cycle as a procession of poignantly themed challenges. Generally speaking, the Aries cycle seeks to embolden and activate. The ram is a kickstarter - it’s time to do, move, breathe, scream, climb, jump, grab, pull, push, dance. Now we make things happen rather than “let them.” Cancer the crab courageously stands in front of the ram with little pincers upraised: slow down! Remember your heart! Cancer is the mother of the zodiac, Aries her firstborn son running headfirst towards the next adventure. Like any good mother, Cancer wants to make sure we are secure and protected. Do our plans for the new year nurture the soul? In yoga this principle is called ahimsa, non-violence. We have a duty, to the Self first and foremost, to treat all beings with love and respect.

Cancer attempts now to redirect the raging fires of the ram. The crab is not satisfied with aspirations that fail to leave room for open emotional expression or proper self-care. The First Quarter will allow us to reconnect to feminine energy – without Cancer’s gentle yet potent maternal powers, it is all too easy to lose stability amidst the flames. Think of this phase as a “back to basics” approach: if we haven’t truly tapped into the full potential of our capacity for Love, how will we accomplish lofty goals in the new year? From Aries we learn to be dynamic and fearless; from Cancer we learn the importance of compassion and sensitivity. Indeed, what we really learn is that it takes incredible fortitude to keep the heart open. As you may recall, Cancer is ruled by the Moon, so she is “at home” for this phase, as we say in astrology. Planets at home are auspicious placements.

The Moon in Cancer intensifies any susceptibility we might already have to lunar energy. Expect people to be more emotional and empathic than usual. This phase is connected to the Last Quarter Moon in Aries of last July 2014. Any themes that predominated then will now resurface. It’s time to get in touch with how and where we can find strength in softness – what keeps the connection between body, heart and mind burning brightly? How do you live up to your responsibility to be kind and patient? I suggest performing a ritual that involves water: a baptism of the soul. Identify what is most important to you and then ask yourself, how can I embody this spirit, how can I become it?

First Quarter Moon in Gemini ☽ Feb 25, 2015

The First Quarter marks the halfway point between the New and Full Moon. The First and Last Quarter occur when the Moon aspects the Sun at a 90 degree angle. (Seen from above, the Moon forms a right angle in relation to an invisible line running through the Earth to the Sun, hence “square” for the name of this astrological aspect. Here the Moon has completed 1/4 of her journey around the Earth.) In this particular phase, the Sun in mutable water Pisces will square the Moon in mutable air sign Gemini. The Moon will rise at noon, peak at dusk and set at midnight.

Approaching checkpoint

This phase is a checkpoint. What aspects of our initiatives have been successful thus far? Where do we need to work harder? Nearing the Full Moon is like creeping to the high point of a rollercoaster: soon all undertakings will be fully realized and answers to lingering questions brought to the fore. You are encouraged now to scope out any flaws in the foundation laid with the New Moon in Pisces. Are your ventures built to last?

The waxing light of the Moon symbolizes a return to total awareness. This is the best time to tweak and improve upon existing plans. At every Full Moon we manifest all that was intended at the New Moon, so the week between the First Quarter and Full Moon (Feb 25 - March 5) is a very powerful time. If you have been diligent, expect to see your ideas come to fruition now.

Making way for the new

Squares mean change. We have reached a corner and must choose a new direction. The building energy and excitement you may feel now is there to inspire you. The First Quarter Moon encourages decisive action, calculated risk-taking, networking and deepened commitment to personal growth. The Moon is asking you to gather yourself. This phase falls in mutable signs, meaning that the most attractive path now will be one that allows for plenty of flexibility. Our intention is to adapt and modify: during the Aquarian cycle, what new aspects of your routine/life philosophy proved to be most conducive to inner peace? What was a lovely idea in theory but failed to manifest smoothly in reality?

Dreams vs. reality

The First Quarter Moon falling in Gemini represents a conflict between our most cherished dreams and the harsh details of reality. I like to imagine each Moon cycle as a procession of poignantly themed challenges. Generally speaking, the Pisces cycle is spiritual in nature. The fishes want to gauge your comfort level with the proverbial death of all things - Pisces represents ultimate change: irreversible transformation. Are you prepared for metamorphosis, should the Universe come knocking on your door at this very moment? The Gemini twins catch the fishes now in all four hands to inspect them meticulously; the First Quarter Moon in this particular cycle is a trial run for the dreamy fish - will our hopes and plans find traction in the real world, or are they better left in the depths of REM sleep?

Gemini attempts now to contain and categorize the free-flowing essence of Pisces. The twins are not satisfied with blank spaces or unanswered questions. The First Quarter will allow us to get organized - without Gemini’s insistence on order, it is all too easy to get swept away in the mighty current of wishful thinking. Think of this phase as a “back to basics” approach: if we haven’t figured out the logistics, how will we accomplish lofty spiritual goals? From Pisces we learn to be romantic, optimistic, faithful and gentle; from Gemini we learn the importance of practicality, intellectualism and precision. At this time our desire to get everything in shipshape speaks to the heart while the responsibility of remaining open and flexible will feel more like a duty.

When the Moon transits an air sign, social and mental energy run high. Expect people to be more chatty and animated than usual. I like to visualize Gemini as an arcade: stimuli for days, an endless turbine of noise and color and movement. So if you feel like going out and mingling with the masses, this is perfectly natural. It’s time to get in touch with how and where we can better focus on the smaller details of day-to-day life - what keeps you running at top speed? How do you live up to your responsibility to be punctual, tidy and efficient? I suggest getting everything in writing: plans, aspirations, ideals, beliefs, methods. Identify what is most important to you and then ask yourself: how can I embody this in mind, body and spirit, how can I become it?

The First Quarter marks the halfway point between the New and Full Moon. The First and Last Quarter Moon phases occur when the Moon squares the Sun at a 90 degree angle. In this particular phase, the Sun in fixed air Aquarius will square the Moon in fixed earth sign Taurus. From the Earth, the “right side” of the Moon will be illuminated. The Moon rises at noon, peaks at dusk and sets at midnight.

Reaching a checkpoint

This phase is a checkpoint. What aspects of our initiatives have been successful thus far? Where do we need to work harder? It’s like creeping to the high point of a rollercoaster, represented by the Full Moon: a time when all undertakings are fully realized and answers to lingering questions brought to the fore. The Moon encourages you now to scope out flaws in the foundation laid with the New Moon in Aquarius. Are your ventures built to last?

The waxing light of the Moon symbolizes a return to total awareness. This is the best time to tweak and improve upon existing plans. At every Full Moon we conclude all that we have set out to do at the New Moon, so the week between the First Quarter Moon and the Full Moon (January 26 – February 3) is a very powerful time. If you have been diligent, expect to see your ideas come to fruition now.

Making way for the new

Squares mean change. We have reached a corner and must choose a new direction. The building energy and excitement you may feel now is there to inspire you and encourage decisive action, calculated risk-taking, networking and deepened commitment to personal growth. The Moon is asking you to gather yourself. This phase falls in fixed signs, meaning that the most attractive path now will be one that is sustainable. Our intention now is to build upon that which was conceived during the initiatory Capricorn cycle. Taurus energy takes Aquarian ideas/ideals and molds them into manifest reality.

Mind over matter

The First Quarter Moon falling in Taurus represents a conflict between the mental body and the material world. Aquarius generates thoughts and conversation as rapidly as the wind; Taurus abides firmly in the tangible side of life, as this is where the bull feels most comfortable. Aquarian energy may feel rather frustrated by the bull’s insistence on moving slowly and deliberately. Taurus asks of the water bearer: are your dreams and goals applicable? How can we use this in everyday life? Both signs are headstrong in their own way. The water bearer doesn’t understand why the bull can’t be more experimental and unconventional; the bull sees the water bearer as ungrounded, speeding through life with impatience, disconnected from what is. The challenge is to continue fanning the spark of intellect, allowing Aquarius energy to spiral into its fullest expression, while still tuning in to physical existence and the limitations thereof. From Aquarius we learn to be bold, radical and imaginative; from Taurus we learn the art of practicality and stability. At this time our desire to feel steady and rooted speaks to the heart while the pull towards creative/social/unorthodox experiences will feel more like a duty.

When the Moon transits an earth sign, physical energy runs low. Expect people to be more argumentative and stubborn than usual. I like to visualize Taurus as a lazy, happy cat; the bull loves nothing more than curling up in a pile of blankets with a good book, cup of tea and cuddle buddy. So if you feel like staying in and avoiding the masses, this is perfectly natural. This is a time of getting in touch with what makes us feel warm and fuzzy - what makes us feel at home. Taurus energy requires that we take our time, focusing on quality over quantity. If balanced, expect to feel quite relaxed.

The Moon is asking you to gather yourself. This phase falls in cardinal signs, meaning that the most attractive path now will be one that is groundbreaking and pioneering. Our intention now is to build from the ground up. The Sagittarius cycle heralded definitive endings – now we harness the inaugural energy of the Capricorn cycle.

The First Quarter Moon falling in Aries represents a conflict between the Self and the proverbial father. It is important that we assert ourselves and protect our individuality but not at the cost of ignoring the very institutions and traditions which allow us to be independent. I like to visualize Capricorn as holding Aries back, inquiring of the ram whether or not we’ve considered all of our options. Precisely like a concerned father, the sea goat wants to make sure that our plans are sound and reasonable. Aries is impatient, being the first sign in the zodiac; there is a deep urge with this sign to break free, to run headfirst into the rising sun. Think of Aries as a reckless teenager chomping at the bit and screaming LET ME GO! The challenge is to move forward with our personal agenda while still respecting the customs and conventions that many hold so dear. From Capricorn we learn to be methodical and careful; from Aries we learn that we can still get by splendidly even if we chuck it all out the window and go for it wholeheartedly - no plan, no direction, just pure unbridled energy. At this time our desire to favor the Self will speak to the heart while the pull towards patriarchal appreciation will feel more like a duty.

When the Moon transits a fire sign, the vibrations around us are quite palpable. Expect people to be more feisty, animated and vigorous than usual. Aries is also known for having a temper. Know that the words and actions of this transit are the first whisperings before the beginning of the next cosmological cycle in spring. This phase of the Moon represents a return to square one. Think of a ram breaking through a wall – powerful, bold and potentially rash. So take lots of deep breaths - tune in - be present. You may recall that we had a Last Quarter Moon in Aries way back in July. This phase is a check-up on your progress since then. Any predominant themes at that time will now resurface.

The First Quarter marks the halfway point between the New and Full Moon. The First and Last Quarter Moon phases occur when the Moon squares the Sun at a 90 degree angle. In this particular phase, the Sun in mutable fire sign Sagittarius will square the Moon in mutable water sign Pisces. From the Earth, the “right side” of the Moon is illuminated. The Moon will rise at noon, peak at dusk and set at midnight.

We are approaching a checkpoint

This phase is a checkpoint: what aspects of our initiatives have been successful thus far? Where do we need to work harder? It’s as though we are creeping to the high point of a rollercoaster, represented by the Full Moon, a time when all undertakings are fully realized and answers to lingering questions brought to the fore. The Moon encourages you now to scope out flaws in the foundation laid with the New Moon in Sagittarius. Are your ventures built to last?

The waxing light of the Moon symbolizes a return to total awareness. This is the best time to tweak and improve upon existing plans. At every Full Moon we conclude all that we have set out to do at the New Moon, so the week between the First Quarter Moon and the Full Moon is a very powerful time.

This phase falls in mutable signs, meaning that the most attractive path now will be one that leaves room for the unexpected. Our intention now is to adapt and modify. The Sagittarius cycle will likely herald definitive endings or closures – we are near the finish line, diligently preparing for the initiatory Capricorn cycle.

Water vs. fire

The conflict here is between water and fire; the fish is a dreamer, the archer a doer. Although both signs can be restless in their own way, Sagittarius is undoubtedly the more antsy one. The duty of the fish is to calm the archer down so as to consider the following: are my actions leading me to a higher, better place? Sagittarians, when left to their own means, may not take the necessary time to reflect. Pisces energy encourages us to rest, contemplate and recharge. The centaur archer must learn that this is in fact a very important step in the process of doing and becoming. If we do not give ourselves the opportunity to let it all sink in, we fail to gain the proper insight needed to effectively move forward. So take a deep breath, close your eyes and simply observe what, if anything, is bubbling up in your heart.

Tune in to your inner body

When the Moon transits a water sign, emotions run high. This is not a particularly social phase. Expect others to feel like staying in and doing nothing. As stated, this is actually not such a bad thing. It is all too easy during the Sagittarius cycle to give it out, out, out until we are exhausted. We must strike a balance with meditation and a return to feminine energy. The fish is gentle, empathic and mysterious. Our challenge is to have both the strength required to hold and shoot the bow of the archer and the sensitivity needed to care for our inner fishes, the ones who live in the heart, swimming silently yet constantly, forever chasing tails.

The waxing light of the Moon symbolizes a return to total awareness. This is the best time to tweak and improve upon existing plans. At every Full Moon we conclude all that we have set out to do at the New Moon, so the week between the First Quarter Moon and the Full Moon is a very powerful time. If you have been diligent, expect to see your ideas come to fruition now.

Squares mean change. We have reached a corner and must choose a new direction. The building energy and excitement you may feel now is there to inspire you and encourage decisive action, calculated risk-taking, networking and deepened commitment to personal growth. The Moon is asking you to gather yourself. This phase falls in fixed signs, meaning that the most attractive path now will be one that is permanent. Our intention now is to sustain and fortify. This is not necessarily a time of definitive endings and beginnings - we are in between, working diligently without glancing up, fully submersed in our journey.

The water bearer is community-minded, often very talkative and social; the scorpion prefers peaceful, solitary spaces, like a cat sitting quietly in a dark nook. With the New Moon Solar Eclipse in Scorpio, all that we set in motion was wrought from the gut and soul, deep within our being. The water bearer’s duty is to test this construct: do our plans leave room for others, or is it a strictly personal agenda, applicable only to the Self? The scorpion, when left unchecked, would rather remain inside, tucked away from the surface of life. Aquarius ensures that we communicate and share what’s on our mind. In so doing, we further crystallize our intentions. This is a great lesson for the scorpion: talking to others and allowing them to gain insight to our thoughts allows us to come out of the bubble of the Self for a moment as well as strengthen our commitments.

When the Moon transits an air sign, social and mental energy runs high. This is a good time to catch up with friends, write letters and finish up any projects or tasks that involve groups of people. Expect others to be more stubborn, loud and messy than usual if imbalanced. The water bearer can get so caught up thinking of other people and how to best serve them that the smaller details, such as cleanliness, may get left behind. If balanced, enjoy this brief respite from what is sure to be an otherwise emotionally charged month ahead of us. Use this breezy energy to go exploring by yourself; make some experimental art; write down all your rambling thoughts; get lost in a book; meet new people; hike near big hills/mountains; practice yogic heart openers.
