All that we aspired to during the Gemini cycle now comes to culmination. This particular full moon was called the Strawberry Moon by the Algonquins of North America as it coincides with berry ripening season. In Europe, it is often called the Rose Moon. The moon will rise at sunset, peak at midnight and set at sunrise.

The Sun and Moon are now in total opposition between mutable air Gemini and mutable fire Sagittarius: intellect vs. spirit. What I feel most viscerally when I visualize this axis is actually harmony - this is one polarity in which the two ends seem to have more in common than not. You may recall that we had a Full Moon in Gemini the first week of December 2014. We have now reached the other end, a reversal of the Gemini-Sagittarius axis. Any themes/conflicts that predominated then will now resurface.

Mercury vs. Jupiter

The Gemini-Sagittarius polarity works to achieve balance between the mind and spirit. Let’s meditate for a moment on the ruling planets of each sign, Mercury and Jupiter respectively. Mercury rules the active, conscious mind; he is swift, versatile and restless. Jupiter is the jolly uncle of the zodiac, the giver of spiritual gifts, bearer of luck. What I’d like to elucidate with this comparison: real abundance comes only when we have first mastered the mind, and in so doing, become fully aware of our thoughts, habits and behavior.

Whereas Gemini abides effortlessly (yet perhaps a bit nervously) in the raw mindspace of waking life and external reality, the Full Moon in Sagittarius yearns to break through that physical reality, to chase after all that is intangible, all that feeds the soul’s endless desire for truth and understanding. The Gemini-Sagittarius polarity lies between words and wordlessness. Gemini immediately resorts to logic or conversation/writing in order to understand life intellectually, but Sagittarius innately recognizes that some things must be experienced to be known: as Tao master Lao Tzu decried, the way that can be named is not the Way. The twins stick together, deeply intertwined in the familiar; the archer shoots bow after fiery bow into the darkness in order to illuminate the unknown.

Open your mind!

Opposite signs on the zodiac wheel have inherent differences, but they also have a lot in common. Gemini and Sagittarius both find their freedom in the mind’s capacity to expand and absorb new information. However, the archer is more comfortable with mystery. There is a certain seriousness to the unemotional, ultra rational approach of the twins. Indeed, the archer is anything but serious. Too much Sagittarius energy makes life feel vague and careless. Too much Gemini makes us tight and rigid, seated firmly in the thinking mind. The archer reminds the twins that it’s unhealthy for body and spirit to lean so heavily on reason alone, unwilling or unable to relax and allow room for uncertainty and the joy found therein; and yet the twins remind the centaur that there is much to be gained from precision and accuracy.

Gemini and Sagittarius are both restless, seeking. The Gemini cycle is an epic journey full of twists and turns. Imagine yourself on this quest, now halfway to the destination. As the full moon rises, people gather from all directions to light an enormous bonfire. Presiding over the flames is Jupiter himself, resplendent in robes of brilliant gold and purple. He laughs and drinks and boogies with all the vibrant humans circling the fire; a drum beat fills the forest, feet pound the earth. The Full Moon in Sagittarius is a reminder that when the road seems to stretch forever and your pack is feeling impossibly heavy, this is cause to celebrate - the burning in your legs, the strain in your heart, the sweat dripping down your face, these are all signs that you are ALIVE, so DANCE.

Your mind contains the entire cosmos

Whereas Sagittarius can be escapist and in denial when imbalanced, Gemini thinks too much, caught in the mind’s incessant squabbling. The centaur sees the best in everyone and everything, always the optimist, but the twins are inclined to critique rather than hope for something more idealistic. Gemini is well acquainted with so-called “reality.” The twins pick apart everything that happens to/around them. Let’s come back to the profound harmony of the Gemini-Sagittarius axis. Those who embody both energies are incredibly open and intellectual, spontaneous and responsible. Be like fire rippling in the wind: a force of breadth fanning the spirit’s embers.

There’s a lot happening right now on this pale blue dot rocketing through space at 18 miles per second, astrologically and otherwise, so let the Full Moon in Sagittarius be a jubilation. Unlike the Full Moon in Scorpio of last month, we are lighthearted and carefree. I suggest a ritual involving fire - invite your neighbors too. You are loved. Namaste.

Saturn Rx in Sagittarius ♄ Mar 14 - June 14

Saturn turns retrograde in Sagittarius from March 14 - June 14 and then in Scorpio from June 14 - August 2

Click here to learn about Saturn.

To be very clear, planets in retrograde are not actually spinning backwards – it is entirely an optical illusion as seen from Earth. Backwards motion appears to happen when Earth passes slower moving planets in the outer solar system. In astrology, this illusion manifests as “backwards” functioning of the planets and their respective roles. Click here to learn more about retrograde motion.

In classic astrology, Saturn rules cardinal earth Capricorn. Saturn is the father who governs authoritatively: strict, sometimes harsh but always well-intentioned. It’s a tough-love kind of deal. Saturn forces us to learn the hard way. His lessons are necessary, but not necessarily enjoyable as they concern the inevitable. Saturn’s teachings are the catalysts of our evolution. Saturnian energy will not leave you alone until you have come to truly understand the depths of life. There is no room here for complacency or superficiality.

Since December 2014, Saturn has been spinning through mutable fire Sagittarius. This duo embodies quite the contradiction. Saturn is all about contraction, Sagittarius expansion. Sagittarius demands that we stretch ourselves beyond what we believe possible, while Saturn mandates that everything be done in the most traditional, concise and orderly manner feasible. How to explore new horizons with a sense of adventure and curiosity when there’s a voice booming rules and directions in your ear? Saturn in Sagittarius demands that we grow rapidly, yet still within a framework: structured and disciplined evolution.

Sagittarius rules truth, morality and honor. This is where Saturn directs his iron first now: are you living in accordance with your personal code? We seek wisdom and experiences which connect us to something greater than the Self. We are on a quest now to learn about anything and everything. However, we must move with caution. Saturn will not indulge the centaur’s propensity for irresponsibility or recklessness. We feel a constant need now for heightened awareness but will not be allowed to lose touch with reality. One way we can satisfy all parties is by picking up skills/trades in a certifiable setting. This is the perfect time to go (back) to school or receive training in a new vocational direction. Mind expansion through learning pleases the archer and the regulated, officious environment of a school/apprenticeship gratifies Saturn. Expect mentors to begin entering your life; this is the natural result of Saturn the Patriarch teaming up with Sagittarius the Just.

Coming into alignment with philosophies that uplift and empower is the goal now. This may indicate a keen/renewed/sudden interest in spiritual teachings. Sagittarius is a free thinker, but this is definitely not how I would describe Saturn. Best case scenario, we begin to find freedom in our responsibilities. Consider the following: we really do have more freedom when we attend to our responsibilities. Getting all of our work done right away - no excuses, no procrastination, no exceptions, no delays - means more time to be, to live, to run around!

For about 4.5 months out of the year, Saturn is retrograde. Saturn Rx asks us to review and accept our “failures” - but are they really? The Buddha decried that there is no such thing as failure, only lessons learned. If you have been working with sincerity radiating from your heart and soul, karma will reward you handsomely now. Saturn delivers his gifts of abundance even if we do “fail.” As with everything in life, it is only the intention that really matters. I frequently remind my yoga students of this basic yet profoundly elusive principle: it doesn’t matter how well you do anything, what it looks like, who sees it, what it means to the rest of society - none of that. It only matters that you do it. Even better if you can keep an open heart and mind, but that’s not even truly necessary. Otherwise, Saturn Rx thrusts upon us the consequences of inaction. Whether you’ve been slacking or not, this transit often manifests as one long test of our endurance. Progress must be examined with utmost realism. Saturn wants to know: what are you really capable of? How far can you be pushed before frustration sets in? In a few months, let’s walk away with a new level of self-respect.

So - Saturn Rx in Sagittarius looks like what exactly? The time has come to review/redo/revamp/revitalize our beliefs and morals. I’ve personally been feeling immense pressure since December to rid myself of complexes and live, fully and honestly, by my own personal code of honor. If Saturn in Sagittarius has in any way resembled a leisurely meandering journey up until this point, expect that to change now. I predict that this transit will place us in some grueling circumstances where we must discern very carefully what we deem right and wrong. Saturn moves slowly and deliberately. He demonstrates that nothing is worth having if it is does not take time and work. Saturn now reaches up to the crown chakra with a magnifying glass to examine our perceived altruism, willingness to learn and potential to expand, to become something greater than the Self. What do we find floating up there? We must face and define our spiritual blocks with the knowledge that, in so doing, we effectively dissolve the power of lingering fear, hesitation and mistrust. Indeed, to know the problem is to know the solution.

Saturn teaches that change is necessary to move forward. All things must come to an end. Nothing about Saturn is quick, easy or direct. Although I do not expect this transit to be particularly emotional, I do see the potential for new relationships and events which force us to thoroughly examine what and how we know what we think we know. Saturn Rx in Sagittarius is like being on a spaceship gliding through the stars when you notice that the engine light is blinking red. Panic sets in as you begin to calculate just how far you really are from Earth. You’re pretty sure you might collapse just from the stress of envisioning your inevitable death stranded here among the asteroids. This is where Saturn’s voice harmonizes with the drumming and dancing archer. Focus. Resolve the situation with the power of the intellect and a dash of imagination. Your heart is still beating so loudly that you think it might burst. But then tears well in your eyes - I’m alive! Holy shit! In this moment, total clarity. All of your most deeply held convictions effortlessly rise to the fore of Awareness: this is what is most important to me, this is who I want to be, these are the beliefs that keep me going.

Expect some fuzziness concerning long-term goals, plans and responsibilities. Incorporating new limitations and systems into our lives may prove especially difficult now. We must completely surrender - no ego! - to see how these restrictions actually operate as gifts. Fear not, you will feel cleansed and joyously empty, ready to rebuild. But don’t fool yourself into believing you’ll get let off the hook without doing any work!

Last Quarter Moon in Sagittarius ☾ Mar 13, 2015

The Last Quarter Moon in Sagittarius comes exact on March 13, 2015 at 1:48 pm EST

Click here to learn about the Moon. Click here to learn about Sagittarius.

We now approach the Last Quarter, halfway between Full and New with the Moon squaring the Sun at 90˚. (Seen from above, the Moon forms a right angle in relation to an invisible line running through the Earth to the Sun, hence “square” as the name for this astrological aspect. Here the Moon has completed 3/4 of her journey around the Earth.) In this particular phase, the Sun in mutable water Pisces squares the Moon in mutable fire Sagittarius.

The Moon will rise at midnight, peak at dawn and set at noon. If you view the Moon at midnight, the Sun will be positioned directly beneath your feet. Staring at the Moon during this time will align you so that you are looking right out (approximately) along the forward path of Earth’s orbit around the Sun ^__^

A checkpoint

The Full Moon provided illumination, revelations and total awareness of all that was hidden, lurking in the depths. Now we decide which information and ideas best serve us. The waning light of the Moon represents gradual descent into darkness: a return to the proverbial womb. It is wise to wait now before launching new endeavors so as to better prepare for what’s next. The week between the Last Quarter and New Moon (March 13 - 20) is the ideal time to buckle down and wrap up loose ends of all that was set in place with the Supermoon in Pisces three weeks ago.

Squares mean change

We have come to a corner and must choose a direction. Any stress or anxiety that surfaces now is meant to catalyze decision-making. Gracefully surrender to release and forgiveness. Destroy useless internal edifices. The Moon is asking you to empty yourself. This phase falls in mutable signs, meaning that the most attractive path now will be one that allows for flexibility and modification. The entire Pisces cycle thus far has encouraged us to make last minute changes to the beliefs and practices we’ve cultivated over the last astrological year – let this last week be your best yet, no holds barred, just a mega release of highly imaginative, psychedelic, transcendental, utterly glorious work. This phase is also connected to the First Quarter Moon in Pisces at the end of November 2014 – whatever themes predominated at that time will now resurface.

Sagittarius: blast off to new horizons

Sagittarius is the fishes’ fiery predecessor: buoyant, fearless and adventurous. Sagittarius flips the fish out of the water and up to the starlight as if to shout delightedly: don’t take life so seriously! Dance and be free! Embody the joy and excitement of this transformational period. The fishes live within, swimming and dreaming, dreaming and swimming; the archer moves rapidly and courageously through time and space. The last week of the Pisces cycle asks us to return with body, mind and spirit to the ring around the tribal fire so that we may come out from the (cloistered) depths of the inner world. We’ve been working earnestly within, polishing the bright diamond of the heart and soul. Now we breathe life back into the body’s capacity for authentic movement and the expansive powers of the mind. We know who we want to be and what we believe in, so let’s rise magnificently from seated lotus, bursting forth with an ecstatic surge of raw energy and optimism.

Like a flame from the great cosmic bonfire, ascend in a sparkling blaze to worlds that have yet to exist. Allow any remaining inner restlessness to inspire forward motion. Enough introspection, just get out there and fuckin do it. We are fully recharged, ready to put thoughts and ideals into action. The balanced centaur knows that inner work must come first. If we do not give ourselves the opportunity to rest and reflect, we fail to gain the proper insight needed to effectively move. Everything in Existence is conspiring at this very moment to help you achieve whatever you desire. Allow yourself to believe in this truth. Take all the wisdom gleaned from within and apply it headfirst in waking life. We must have both the strength to hold and shoot the bow of the archer and the sensitivity to care for the fishes living in the heart, swimming silently yet constantly, forever chasing tails.

Saturn enters Sagittarius - Dec 23, 2014

Saturn entered Sagittarius on December 23, 2014 and will transit here until December 2017

Click here to learn about Saturn. Click here to learn about Sagittarius.

Since October 2012, Saturn transited fixed water sign Scorpio. How did this translate into daily existence? This was a time of intense scrutiny. Here we examined the dichotomy of faith versus control. Both Saturn and Scorpio energies can be suspicious and manipulative, so this may have been an exceptionally difficult period if you were feeling imbalanced. However, if you successfully tapped into the full potential of Saturn in Scorpio, you will rise up now with unprecedented confidence.

Saturn in Scorpio was a (re)discovery of our worth. While Saturn constantly clawed at our most hidden, visceral insecurities, Scorpio desperately tried to cover them up: vulnerable yet restricted. Like a scorpion lying flat between rock and earth, we reached blindly for total contact and closeness. In the process, we came ever closer to the Self and were forced to confront fears, particularly the fear of rejection. We wanted to bare our soul completely, but this very thing was the most excruciating. This is how Saturn operates! We were asked us to peer into the heart and gut to see all that hurt us, all that we lost and all that made us less than happy. We had to feel everything at the deepest level before we could move forward. Can you stand alone? Do you you have total control over the Self? These are questions to ask now. Ultimately Saturn in Scorpio aimed to teach us that we cannot be close to another until we learn how to be close to the Self - to know and love the Self inside and out, no fear or judgment. Additionally, we were reminded that the Self is the only agent who controls and creates reality. These are very difficult lessons that take many lifetimes to perfect.

Saturn in Scorpio demonstrated how we must give up perceived power to gain new understanding - this is not easy! In the process of giving up power, we may have fallen into states of deep jealousy and fear, especially in one-to-one relationships. Maybe you pushed away people who were once very close to you; maybe you clung to failing relationships, losing health, happiness and appreciation for the present moment. We learned that leaning on others from time to time is perfectly natural. We also learned how and when these dependencies can become unhealthy. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, we transformed heavy emotional baggage. No matter, Saturn in Scorpio did not allow us to cast blame. This was a critical period in which we reclaimed personal accountability - indeed, only YOU can make yourself happy!

This transit encouraged us to recognize change as vital and to sit calmly with fear and depth. We were pushed, not led. Saturn in Scorpio rendered definitive endings and beginnings that helped us grow and mature. We got more comfortable talking and thinking about our purpose in life. Our first inclination might have been to shy away from that which was actually there to heal us. The source of bad habits, compulsions, debts and addictions was revealed so that whatever was truly missing - whatever it was that led us to a state of imbalance - could be illuminated. Saturn in Scorpio plunged us into the subconscious realm so that we could see what truly matters and what doesn’t. If balanced, you will walk away now with the ability to love and forgive with ease and to find meaning even in darkness, mystery and confusion.

To say the least, we are entering a completely different cycle now. Saturn is all about contraction, Sagittarius expansion. The challenge is to stretch and spread, but not in an unruly way. Saturn in Sagittarius demands that we grow rapidly, yet still within a framework, structured and disciplined. Sagittarius rules truth, morality and personal codes. This is where Saturn directs his iron first now: are you living in accordance with your code? Do your beliefs reflect your true Self? Rather than moving in, we’re going out now. We seek wisdom, experience and all that connects us to something greater than the Self. We are on a quest to learn about anything and everything. However, we must move with caution. Saturn will not let the centaur be irresponsible or reckless, as is the nature of this mutable fire sign. We feel a constant need now for greater awareness but will not be allowed to lose touch with reality. From CafeAstrology:

Sagittarius can be a little “messy” in its pursuit of new knowledge and experiences, and Saturn wants to clean this up. Sagittarius focuses on the big picture and gains confidence as a result, but Saturn wants us to fill in some of the details. Positive thinking is wonderful, but if it doesn’t have basis in reality, it can lead us astray or to disappointment, and this is another of Saturn’s lessons.

As with all things related to Saturn, we must continue to examine issues of control. This control now centers on information and belief systems, ruled by Sagittarius. Are you content with your personal beliefs, or do you try to persuade others of “the truth”? And are you walking the talk - you know, the moralistic talk?

This transit encourages movement: move your body, and the mind moves too. To melt the proverbial ice, we must incorporate heat and friction. You may take an interest now in sports, in particular those which are solitary. At a very basic level, it is important to be active every day, even if that just means walking or stretching. Saturn in Sagittarius wants us to circulate ideas - there is no better catalyst for such a thing than moving the body.

Coming into alignment with philosophies that uplift and empower is the goal now. This may include an interest in religious or spiritual teachings. One thing is sure: Sagittarius is a free thinker. However, this is not how I would describe Saturn. Best case scenario, we’ll find freedom in our responsibilities. Consider the following paradox: we have more freedom if we first give attention to our responsibilities - getting all of our work done gives us more time to be! To live! To run around! One place we can find this freedom is in new skills and knowledge. This is the perfect time to get certified in a trade or go (back) to school.

Normally Sagittarius has absolutely no filter, but Saturn’s influence will temper this. Whereas the centaur archer is usually comfortable just shooting the shit and saying whatever, Saturn will force us be precise. Are you really that confident, or just spouting off? A keyword here is authenticity. It will quickly become clear who is genuine and who’s just putting on a show. Speak and act sincerely and you’ve got nothing to worry about. Expect mentors to begin entering your life; this is what happens when Saturn the Patriarch joins up with Sagittarius the Just. One more from CafeAstrology:

Our faith can be tested, and we may be questioning our most basic of assumptions about life, initially not knowing who or what to trust. Until we adjust to this energy, we can experience a fear of the future, some dashed hopes, worries of public disapproval (an especially real concern with social media), and fear of being held back, limited, restricted, not free, or caged in.

Many will now experience a Saturn Return. More to come on that! To find out your Saturn sign and whether he was direct or retrograde at the time of your birth, click here.

The way we speak, write and present ourselves to the world is no longer quite so serious with Mercury moving out of Scorpio. Now are interested in learning about everything and sharing our exciting insights with anyone who will listen! We are open and cheerful, but perhaps not so detail-oriented.

Speak your mind!

The mutable modality of this transit manifests in the expansive nature of our thoughts at this time. Now you might entertain the idea of traveling, moving, going to school or pursuing other lofty goals. Sagittarius energy is also notoriously blunt and indiscreet: no filter, no tact. It’s funny to think that this transition will happen on a major holiday here in the United States. I’m imagining everyone sitting around the table with family and friends after a few drinks and just letting it all out! Anyone you know who is prone to exaggeration or tall tales will be up to their usual antics and then some.

Outward bound

Mercury in Scorpio directed our thoughts below the surface - we wanted to know what made other people tick, what secrets they were keeping, their true motives. Sagittarius could not be less concerned with such questions. Ruled by Jupiter, keeper of justice, Sagittarius would rather discuss issues of fairness in a lighthearted philosophical kind of way. Sagittarius lives in our visions, wanderlust, hopes, ideals and beliefs. When balanced, Sagittarians are exceptionally honest, talkative and happy-go-lucky. Mercury in Scorpio encouraged deep insight and understanding. Sagittarius now wants to expand into more cosmic topics such as spirituality, ethics and equality.

Sagittarius is, once again, a rather odd placement for Mercury. From Tarot.com:

Mercury is a bit of wild-card in Sagittarius. That’s because Mercury is all about thoughts and words, and Sagittarius is all about action. This translates into a time when we may find ourselves speaking too soon, accidentally saying rude things, or spouting off things that aren’t true.

This is quite the opposite of Mercury in Scorpio. We are not focused intently on one thing, but rather on everything - to the extent that we may have difficulty getting grounded and coming back to whatever point we’re trying to make. When taken to the extreme, Mercury in Sagittarius may be brash or unnecessarily forceful when it comes to persuading others of our beliefs. However, this is unlikely, especially when considering that the centaur’s natural state of being is truly a joyous one. We might have an intellectual interest now in people, places and things that are far away from us, physically or otherwise. Anything that draws us out, away from our proverbial home base. Our minds are overwhelmingly inquisitive, like a child learning about the world for the very first time. Indeed, we are very much in touch with our inner child now. In astrology fire energy also represents our creativity and sexual prowess.

Unlike the emotional scorpion, Sagittarius is associated with movement. You may notice that even the pace with which you speak increases now. Many Sagittarians enjoy having long, meandering conversations that cover a whole banquet of topics. Expect human interactions to be pleasant and thoroughly sincere. Sagittarians are many things, but fake is not one of them - unless imbalanced, of course.

Seeking, moving, doing

With Mercury in Scorpio, we wanted to grasp the true essence of our partners and friends. Now that we understand them a little better, we’re ready to see whether our relationships hold intellectual potential. This is a period that will likely see the beginning of many new friendships. We are finally emerging from the mind, heart and gut in order to connect with others. Whereas the scorpion is well equipped to handle arduous and elaborate missions, the centaur archer is masterful at rising above pettiness.

As with Mercury in Scorpio, we are constantly seeking, but in a different sense now. The scorpion seeks what lies within; the centaur, on the other hand, looks out the window into the starry night seeking what lies beyond. Keywords are freedom and spontaneity. When balanced, we come into every situation with the healthy mindset that whatever happens happens. Sagittarius does not make a habit of dwelling in the past or holding grudges. Stirring things up just for the sake of “making things interesting” is done now only with benevolence. We would much rather see people come together than deal with drama. Just remember to choose your words carefully and think before opening up. We have a divine opportunity now to speak our mind, fully and truthfully, without offending more sensitive people.

New Moon in Sagittarius - Nov 22, 2014

The New Moon in Sagittarius comes exact on November 22, 2014 at 7:32 AM EST

Click here to learn more about the Moon. Click here to learn more about Sagittarius.

Every New Moon falls in the same sign as the current sign of the Sun. This is precisely what makes it a New Moon. With the Sun moving into Sagittarius, the New Moon also falls in the sign of the centaur archer. The Full Moon falls in the opposing sign. Sagittarius’ opposite sign on the zodiac wheel (180 degrees across) is Gemini, so this month’s Full Moon will fall here. Quarter Moons land in between on the squares; cycles always fall together in either the fixed, mutable or cardinal signs. The Moon phases this month will all be in the mutable signs.

The Jupiterian cycle

The New Moon in mutable fire sign Sagittarius marks the kickoff for the coming month and the official end of the Scorpio cycle - yay! In classic astrology, Sagittarius concerns higher learning, spirituality and moving forward. You might already be feeling a shift from the heavy Scorpio cycle. Scorpio is ruled by Pluto, so life for the past month was colored by the somewhat dark, cold undertones of this powerful little pseudo planet. We transition now to a more lighthearted period. The focus is less on our emotional body and more on expanding our horizons through new experiences. Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, the lucky one and giver of gifts.

Wisdom: a gateway to other realms

The centaur archer loves to travel both in body and in mind. For this sign, learning is a gateway to higher states. In acquiring a broad knowledge base, Sagittarians come ever closer to achieving true liberation. From Chani Nicholas:

This sign can be obsessed with seeing the bright side, achieving enlightenment and living beyond human restraints … in its evolution Sagittarius the traveller wanders deep to become Sagittarius the philosopher. The one who can journey within. The one who knows that we can be the most, biggest, bestest achiever that there ever was but if we don’t feel love for ourselves in the moments in between the accolades or in the moment of our accusation then nothing that we seek and no amount of roaming we do can ever give us solace. The one who knows that existential angst is a part of the process of being a human. The one that knows that a thrill is fleeting but that wisdom serves us for a lifetime.

The centaur archer thrives on all things inspirational; witnessing and being part of a magnanimous web of people; hope, optimism and idealism; sports, music, parties and dancing; justice and fairness for all; seeking, wandering, flying, yearning, free-wheeling and good old-fashioned adventures; excitement, expansion and growth of all kinds; ideas and concepts that illuminate. When balanced, Sagittarius energy is warm, generous and cheerful. More than anything, the Sagittarius cycle asks us to consider our direction in life. We are encouraged in particular to examine how and what we are learning, and in what ways the things we choose to learn reflect the positive qualities of the centaur archer: does our wisdom serve to uplift the Self and others?

The New Moon is a chance to recreate, to start anew. This phase is like an infant: impressionable, vulnerable and wide-eyed. How will you set the tone for the coming month? What projects have you been meaning to launch? What changes need to be made? This is a time of beginnings, or perhaps going back to the start. Words, thoughts and actions that happen now are seeds planted for harvest at the Full Moon in two weeks.

Recognizing the power of communitas

The New Moon in Sagittarius encourages us to reach out to others. This phase will have you feeling more social and open than usual. By surrounding the Self with other people, we more rapidly manifest a transition from one state of being to another. More interactions with others means more opportunities to bounce ideas around, share new insights and expand upon philosophical queries. This period is a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished when we come out of isolation and rejoin the collective.

Stepping fearlessly into the unknown

The Scorpio cycle forced us to get to the root of things. Using this root as a base, now we jump off into the unknown. Sagittarius is notorious for being restless and hurrying through tasks when imbalanced. The greatest challenge for the archer is learning how to slow down. More often than not, the antics of the centaur are utterly charming and lovable. Sagittarians are usually very well-liked; in fact, they can often be found at the epicenter of any given social sphere. You would be hard-pressed to find an introverted Sagittarius, unless other aspects in the birth chart overshadow this fiery energy. One more from Chani Nicolas:

Mutable signs want to move things about. They were also called double-bodied signs and with Sadge this is quite literal. Half-horse-half-human, the symbol for this sign is a centaur and therefore moves in multiple ways. The half that is horse has stamina for days. Perhaps we could say that there is a mad dash kind of quality to the sign. Rushing through the details, Sagittarius might rely on over-exaggerations to make its point.

Moving rapidly

The mutable nature of this phase is even stronger than what we experienced with the Virgo cycle. Expect physical and creative energy to pick up significantly now. Allow this fire energy to act as a catalyst for understanding and forgiveness. Just as fire burns a forest and prepares the way for new growth and rebirth, so too can the fires of the archer help you to start over. Throw it all in the flames - let it die so that new things can come in. Let go of what you have so that you may reach for what comes next. Expect laughter and smiles and good times to come easily now. Namaste.

Sun enters Sagittarius - Nov 22, 2014

The Sun enters Sagittarius on November 22, 2014 and will transit here until December 21, 2014

Click here to learn about the Sun. Click here to learn about Sagittarius.

When talking about your Sun sign, it’s really more accurate to say “the Earth’s relation to the Sun” since the Earth is the one moving. An appropriate name for this much-celebrated, often oversimplified astrological element would therefore be Earth Sign.

If you are a Sagittarius, for the next month you have a Solar Return. Whatever was set in place when the Sun last transited mutable fire sign Sagittarius will now come to fruition. With the Sun in Scorpio for the last month, our attention was directed inward, deep within the psyche. This was a time of exploring all that lies beneath our waking consciousness. Now we move out and away to connect with something greater than the Self. The centaur archer is an active and creative force. Keywords here are optimism and movement.

Fire energy

This cycle is likely to be much more lighthearted than the Scorpio cycle. We surface now from the depths, more than ready to socialize and explore. Sagittarius craves experiences. This is the Universe reassuring you: it’s perfectly acceptable to let loose for awhile, especially after being so serious and (perhaps) emotional for the last month. Prepare also for a quickening - mutable energy moves rapidly. I like to visualize Sagittarius energy as a crackling bonfire lighting up a winter night; a joyous circle of dancing people; a comet exponentially gaining speed; rainbows and sunshine; a holiday party; a great success story; a glass half full; an excitable child; noise and color spiraling forever, out into space.

Expansion through learning

Balanced Sagittarians are cheerful, energetic, helpful, idealistic and eager to learn about everything. Sagittarians are usually but not always quite athletic. As a general rule, they need a lot of both physical and mental stimulation. More so than other signs, the archer is constantly seeking and reaching. There is a tendency here, due to the mutable nature of the sign, to become quite bored and restless with even the smallest of pauses. On the bright side, Sagittarians are capable of accomplishing a lot in a short amount of time if they can effectively channel their (excessive) energy. This is easily the greatest challenge for the archer: slowing down long enough to take a full breath and acknowledge the finer details. When grounded, Sagittarians are remarkable friends, lovers, teachers and adventurers. The karmic purpose behind incarnation as a Sagittarius is expansion through higher learning and spirituality.

Laughter is on the way

Unlike Scorpio, the centaur archer is not typically drawn to dark and morbid subjects. Sagittarius desires to become more aware and to understand life by embracing the light and joy quietly existing all around us. When balanced, this manifests as extraordinary vision. Sagittarius is able to see all horizons at once. Or, at the very least, the archer leaves room for the unexpected in all plans. Many Sagittarians have an unmistakable charm and enthusiasm that is hard not to love. In fact, the centaur sometimes has difficulty turning off the grin and getting in touch with the heavier side of life. The more that Sagittarians can embrace responsibility and discipline, rather than rejecting them in favor of half-baked shortcuts, the more likely they will be satisfied with their progress, no matter how many setbacks are encountered. One thing is for sure: the archer aims high and rarely misses.

Raise the bar

How does this all translate into our daily existence? Expectations will be high, maybe even too high. We are prone now to overestimating how much we can actually get done. However, this is the perfect time to cultivate your faith in humanity and the greater Universe. We are full of hope and confidence in all people and endeavors. Fire energy helps us to move and do; we quickly turn our dreams into reality now. You are free now to imagine all that could or should be in the world. The Sun in Sagittarius encourages you to ask why not? Prepare to feel like a snake shedding its skin: refreshed, invigorated, alive. YOGA CHALLENGE

Focus on the crown chakra in meditation. Sagittarius is often associated with royal purple, the color of the crown. Visualize the chakra expanding, regulating an even flow of energy both into and out of your body.

Venus enters Sagittarius - Nov 16, 2014

Venus enters Sagittarius on November 16, 2014 and will transit here until December 10, 2014

Click here to learn about Venus. Click here to learn about Sagittarius.

Venus now moves out of fixed water sign Scorpio and into mutable fire sign Sagittarius. We have one more week in the Scorpio cycle before we dance our way into the joyous realm of the centaur archer. I hope that the scorpion has successfully guided you through this transit. Venus’ move into Sagittarius is like a sparkling whisper before the grand ignition of a blaze that will fill the entire sky. Soon enough we will be fully immersed in the flames.

The focus for the last few weeks with Venus in Scorpio was power and transformation. We craved profound soul connections, sexual transcendence and deep change. The scorpion desires. Wants felt like needs, such was our passion. Under this influence we were intense, probing and perhaps deliberately mysterious or cryptic. Many of our thoughts and actions were driven by lust. If balanced, this transit may have heralded a period of healthy self-discovery and spirituality. The energy here was fierce, intimate and sensual. If imbalanced, you may have given in more readily to compulsions and urges. So, what to expect now as the Goddess of Love frolics into the sign of the archer?

Adventures await us

The move now is from a passionate heart to an optimistic one. The energy of this transit is jolly and dynamic. We feel curious, buoyant, spontaneous and in great need of stimulation. In our relationships we no longer seek extremes. Herein lies the mutable nature of this placement: our focus now is on making the rounds, meeting as many people as possible and maybe even experimenting with different types of romantic unions. The centaur archer refuses to settle. This lends a certain restlessness to the sign. Sagittarius must wander freely, dashing here and there, excitedly exploring all that there is. The shadow side of Sagittarius is the inability to sit still long enough to become acquainted with/confront reality. Sometimes centaurs are so eager to climb to new heights of idealism that they will do anything to escape unpleasant situations and responsibilities.

Cultivating trust

We ardently value truth and honesty when it comes to relationships now. Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, keeper of justice and fairness. Our mind is wide open; we are ready and willing to strike up a conversation even with strangers. The centaur loves nothing more than to trust and be trusted unconditionally. Sagittarius is the web of acquaintances that create a community and our abiding faith in humanity. We are determined to expand our social circle now. Like fellow fire sign Leo, the centaur loves to learn. You may meet and talk with people now about philosophical subjects. If Venus in Scorpio was the divine and eternal union of true lovers, Venus in Sagittarius represents the heart’s power to connect to many people at once.

Fighting for freedom

When taken to the extreme, Venus in Sagittarius may manifest as sovereignty struggles. Other people might try to unsuccessfully push you into situations or circumstances that limit your personal freedom. However, if balanced, this transit should be quite cheerful. The Sagittarius cycle is one in which we adapt and modify all that was fortified during the Scorpio cycle. In other words, this isn’t a time of new beginnings, but rather a period of adjustment in preparation for the initiatory cardinal Capricorn cycle in December.

Time to party

Expect others to be more extroverted and positive. The balanced Sagittarius eschews drama in favor of good vibrations. I like to visualize this transit as a party to which everyone is invited. The centaur archer is not particularly known for being deep or intense, but that does not mean that these types are not profound or insightful in their own lighthearted way. We approach our leisure and love life now with a carefree attitude. Expect bumps and bruises sustained during the Scorpio cycle to heal considerably now. You can take a deep breath and relax your heart. I think we’re all ready to loosen up a bit and move out of the deep black pools of the scorpion. Venus in Sagittarius will draw you out of the internal world and into your surroundings. The transition from meditative, contemplative Scorpio to excitable Sagittarius is much-needed relief. Suddenly all of the energy that was creating a gigantic supernatural whirlpool in the heart is bursting forth now, illuminating everything around us (feeling -> moving).

YOGA CHALLENGE

Sagittarius rules the hips and thighs. Try a simple quadricep stretch on your stomach. Come up on to forearms, with elbows directly beneath shoulders. Turn your left hand in so that the fingertips point toward the right elbow. Bend your right knee behind you and reach back with the right hand to grab the back of the foot, transferring your weight to the left forearm in the process. Keep your thumb up with the eye of the elbow pointing toward the sky. Begin to bring the foot toward the outside of the right hip while resisting this motion by pressing the back of the foot into the hand. Relax the head and neck and keep rooting through the extended leg into the earth. Energetically square the shoulders to the front of your mat and breathe into your heart. Come through center and take child’s pose before switching sides.

Mars enters Sagittarius - Sep 13, 2014

Mars enters Sagittarius on September 13, 2014 and will transit here until October 26, 2014

Click here to learn more about Mars.

Until now, Mars has been in fixed water sign Scorpio since July 25, 2014. This period was a commingling of strong warrior essence and the transformative, probing energy of the scorpion. We were intensely driven and focused if balanced, or perhaps feeling caught in a whirlpool of obscurity. Sexual energy predominated. What can we expect now with Mars moving into mutable fire sign Sagittarius?

We begin to surface from the depths of our psychic well, reemerging on the scene with new wisdom and insight. Mars’ power will be sourced now from our goals and ideals. No longer do we dwell in the (sometimes) dark, uncomfortable caverns of the emotional body. Think of Sagittarius as a group of dancing people circling an enormous bonfire: joyous, animated, alive. During this transit you may begin to question whether or not you’ve gotten too comfortable. Sagittarius rejects routines and predictability. This energy is expansive and restless, like a new star blooming in the night sky. Mars normally rules cardinal fire Aries, so he is right at home here in a fellow fire sign. Expect to feel a rush of physical energy with this planetary placement.

I like to visualize this transit as a rainbow comet blazing through the darkness, gathering speed and understanding along the way. We are fearless, optimistic and forward-thinking. Our soul is relieved to be out of the woods and into the light. Here we feel more spontaneous and open, as is the nature of this mutable sign. The archer sees difficulties as hay bales in an obstacle course: no need to stress, just another hurdle to surmount with ease. We keep moving effortlessly, above and beyond.

Here we are called to be more adventurous. With Mars in Scorpio, we had a one-track mind. Now the tracks are multiplying, looping and crossing in every direction. We draw our power from the flexibility of the mental body and our constant desire to learn more, more, more! Through the acquisition of knowledge, we connect to all that is greater than the Self. Think of this transit as a rocket leaving Earth with an uncertain destination. Power up and prepare for the unexpected.

Our thirst now is for new experiences. Like the archer, we choose a target and take aim. And then, with the mind of a human and the legs of a horse, we gallop enthusiastically, full speed ahead. The shadow side of this transit manifests as being overly blunt and reckless. It is important to be honest, but not brash; daring, but not irresponsible.

All in all, spirits are soaring and we are in the mood to meet new people and have a good time. We are candid, sincere, forthright and maybe a bit fidgety. Remember to move clearly and calmly if need be. There is an art to learning when and where to speak our minds! It is easy to get carried away here - keep asking all the important questions and then be sure to listen. When we’re moving quickly, being forced to slow down can be so frustrating. However, if we fail to take our time, we might miss crucial details.

YOGA CHALLENGE

Focus on hip and hamstring opening poses. I recommend a gentle wide-legged seated stretch keeping a straight spine, perhaps with a block under the sacrum if you are particularly tight here. Remember to engage the quads and knee caps and energetically widen the thighs back and apart. Consciously spiral the femurs up and back in the hip sockets. Flex the feet and relax the lumbar. Let the head and neck hang if this feels comfortable in your body. Hands may be passive in front of the body on the floor, or placed along the legs for support.

First Quarter Moon in Sagittarius - Sep 2, 2014

The First Quarter Moon in Sagittarius comes exact on September 2, 2014 at 7:11 AM EST

Click here to learn more about the Moon.

The First Quarter marks the halfway point between the New and Full Moon. The First and Last Quarter Moon phases occur when the Moon squares the Sun at a 90 degree angle. In this particular phase, the Sun in mutable earth sign Virgo will square the Moon in mutable fire sign Sagittarius. The Moon will rise at noon, peak at dusk and set at midnight.

This phase of the Moon is a checkpoint. Now we assess how well we are doing – what aspects of our initiatives have been successful thus far? Where do we need to work harder? This phase is like creeping to the high point of a rollercoaster, represented by the Full Moon, a time when our work is brought to completion and answers to lingering questions are illuminated. We are encouraged to find the cracks in the foundation we laid down with last week’s New Moon in Virgo. Are your ventures built to last?

The waxing light of the moon symbolizes gradual motion towards total awareness, a return to clarity. This is the best time to tweak and improve upon existing plans. At every Full Moon we conclude all that we have set out to do at the New Moon. The week between the First Quarter Moon and the Full Moon is a very powerful time. If you have been diligent, expect to see your ideas come to fruition now.

Squares mean change. We have come to a corner, and now we must choose a route. The building energy and excitement you may feel at this phase is there to encourage pioneering. This is a time of decisive action, calculated risk-taking, networking and deepened commitment to personal growth. The Moon is asking you to gather yourself. This phase falls in mutable signs, meaning that the most attractive path now will be one that can be easily adapted. We are feeling flexible, open to many directions.

The First Quarter Moon falling in Sagittarius represents a conflict between our need to focus on work and routines and our desire to expand, spiraling out into space towards the next unconquered horizon. It is important that we stay organized and put in the hours to accomplish things that are not necessarily very fun, but not at the cost of denying ourselves the opportunity to let loose and be adventurous. Simply put, the battle here is between the details and the big picture. The challenge is to keep our life in order while still allowing ourselves to be spontaneous and totally open to new experiences. Virgo is a very tight, controlled energy squaring Sagittarius, an energy which is jolly, optimistic and intrepid. At this time our desire to be free of restrictions will speak to the heart while the pull towards work will feel more like a duty.

When the Moon transits through a fire sign, physical and sexual energy are at an all-time high. This is a time of increased socializing and exploration. I like to visualize Sagittarius energy as a rainbow comet, blazing through the night, warming and illuminating all that it passes.
