When we’re talking about the Sun sign, it’s really more accurate to say “the Earth’s relation to the Sun” since the Earth is the one who’s moving. A more appropriate name would be Earth Sign.

If you are a Virgo, for the next month you have a Solar Return. This is your peak, which means many things. Whatever was set in place at the end of last summer when the Sun transited Virgo will now come to fruition. The Solar Return in Virgo will have you feeling ready to restructure your life if necessary. This is a time of organization and establishing a routine. Personal health often becomes a focus now.

I like to visualize Virgo energy as our inner “responsible side” that comes at the end of the summer to clean up and get us ready for the upcoming autumn season. Balanced Virgos are tidy, hardworking, dependable and straightforward. Imagery here includes the colors white and gray (although I know a lot of Virgos who love to wear black), mundane work such as chores, all things related to the medical field, repetitious tasks/art forms such as is required by long hours of practicing, innocence, piousness and order. Virgo is ruled by Mercury so expect the energy this month to move quickly. The mutable nature of this transit manifests in the many changes that we make, internally and externally, in preparation for colder weather and perhaps a return to school or work.

Our focus shifts now from leisure and flamboyant expression to the finer details. Virgo energy encourages us to be methodical and patient. Expect to feel the need, perhaps out of the blue, to change what you see or feel around you. Many of us will now return to a regular workout schedule, a better diet or, at the very least, a new level of seriousness concerning these issues. If you already have health as a priority, this transit will have you perfecting through practice. Lots and lots and lots of practice.

Virgo is the sign of the virgin. The virgin typically represents purity and youth. Of course this does not mean that all Virgos are innocent and virginal. I see this manifesting rather as a confident self-image; buoyant optimism; curiousness; fearlessness in trying new things and meeting new people. When imbalanced, Virgo energy is critical, cynical, nitpicky, intransigent, cold and self-conscious. Although Virgo is an earth sign, the mutable modality here puts an interesting twist on what is otherwise a very grounded sign. Virgos, unlike your typical Taurus or Capricorn, very much enjoy frequent changes in life. This includes changes in appearance, trying new activities, traveling and living in a way that might make other earth signs feel unstable. With Virgo details are a priority, but the nature of these details is always open to suggestion.

Virgos have a reputation in the astrology world for being a tad bit boring at times. I personally believe this stems from a constant need for control, but not necessarily in a domineering way. Virgos simply enjoy having a lot of control over their bodies and emotions. Because of this, Virgos who are imbalanced are often completely out of control in body, mind and spirit. More so than other signs, the difference between a healthy and unhealthy Virgo is pretty stark.

When balanced, Virgos are intensely driven to succeed and, unlike Leos, do not mind putting in the hours. Like the lion, Virgos can be lazy, but they will get right back to work without complaining or attempting to linger in a state of leisure. Indeed many Virgos define themselves by the work they do. They have unmistakable pride here, especially when it comes to reflecting on all they had to do in order to achieve this success.

Like Leos, Virgos love to feel needed and appreciated. They often end up in professions that allow them to help other people help themselves. Virgos have an eye for what needs to be adapted, fixed. Perhaps more than any other sign, Virgos hold themselves to extremely high standards. If they do not meet their own expectations for flawlessness, they can be very self-critical. It can be difficult for Virgos to stay calm and relaxed - their minds are usually working in hyperdrive! This is another manifestation of the mercurial nature of the sign. The Virgo brain is hard to shut off, as it is full of questions, questions, questions! Virgo needs to know why and how for proper analysis of a given situation.

In classic astrology Virgo is associated with practicality, health, work, sensibility and logic. As with all other signs, no two Virgos are the same. However I feel that this is especially true when it comes to Virgo; they are highly unique and have tons of varying interests. Virgos are constantly working on themselves. There is a bend here for continual improvement, mentally and physically. Although some can be a bit reserved at first, you will soon find that there is a vast, undiscovered world within the Virgo mind. Like Leos, Virgos hate giving up on people and situations due to their devoted character. Expect the following month to bring more mental and less sexual energy.

YOGA CHALLENGE

Time to perfect your headstand! This is something I’ve been working on a lot lately. Inversions are calming and centering - Virgo energy may have your nervous system overreacting. BKS Iyengar said that the headstand is the king of all poses.

Mantra: I am disciplined
