The Sun transits Aquarius from January 20, 2015 until February 18

Disclaimer: when talking about Sun signs, it’s really more accurate to say “the Earth’s relation to the Sun” since the Earth is the one moving. An appropriate name for this much-celebrated, often oversimplified astrological element would be Earth Sign. Please remember that you are SO much more than just your Earth Sign! You contain a whole soup of planets.

If you are an Aquarius, this next month is your Solar Return. Whatever was set in place when the Sun last transited this fixed air sign will now come to fruition. With the Sun in Capricorn for the last month, our attention was directed toward issues of stability and control. This was a period of planning, organizing and just gettin’ shit done. Now we break free. Aquarians are known for their intellect, leadership skills and eccentricity. Keywords are radical and communal.

Let’s get funky

This cycle will encourage you to be unprecedentedly creative, social and adventurous. After laying the groundwork and adding a bit of structure to our lives, we’re ready to dive in and see which aspects of our plans could stand to be more unique and original. Energy levels are up - we are animated, excitable and down to try pretty much anything. Aquarius is the sign of the water bearer, and as such plays a crucial role in society: symbolically, water is something that everyone needs. The water bearer is community-minded, always thinking of how to best support and promote others. This is a very selfless way to be. Aquarians become easily frustrated by egocentric types. The balanced water bearer is unconventional, quirky, inquisitive and innovative. Imbalanced Aquarians can be disorganized, flaky, undisciplined or overly headstrong.

Coloring outside the lines

I like to refer to Aquarius as “the non-conformist.” First and foremost, Aquarians absolutely must follow their own path, regardless of whether or not it is popular. The water bearer doesn’t care very much about what other people are doing. Now is the time to listen to the beat of your own drum and embrace all things alternative, whether this means a new eclectic group of friends, unorthodox spiritual or philosophical beliefs or a keen interest in something like non-traditional medicine or lifestyles.

The non-conformist is known for tolerance and open-mindedness. Aquarians accept anyone and everyone without judgment. The water bearer usually has a very wide circle of friends because of this. Expect to begin joyfully meeting and getting to know others, especially those from social circles with which you wouldn’t normally overlap. Seeing people living and working together in harmony is what makes us most happy during this transit.

Channeling fixed energy

Under the influence of fixed energy we can be stubborn, perhaps believing that our way of doing things is the best and only way to do them. This is the shadow side of Aquarius. The water bearer’s opposite sign is Leo. You may recall that the Sun rules Leo, so he was “at home” here this summer, as we say in astrology. This means that the Sun is in his detriment in Aquarius, 180 degrees away from home. With the Sun in Leo, we simply felt proud to be ourselves. Now we find pride in our ability to contribute to the collective.

Creative juices

Like the lion, Aquarius loves the arts. The water bearer has a special interest in theater, graphic design and photography. Our focus this month is on enjoyment and expression, as it was with the Sun in Leo, but now we desire connection to people/ideas outside the Self. Generosity is sourced from the mind; we want to share and teach - to fortify the Universal intellect - to spread knowledge as a way to empower, uplift and revitalize our community. The lion lives from the heart; Aquarius is detached, even aloof, preferring the solidarity/solitude found in the power of intelligence. The balanced water bearer doesn’t find the Self nearly as fascinating or meritorious as humanity in its splendiferous wholeness.

Air energy: cool and detached

Despite everything I’ve just said, Aquarians are usually quite calm and collected, even in the heat of arguments. They carry a striking internal confidence that Leo often lacks. When balanced, Aquarians know the nature of their intentions and don’t feel a constant need to prove/defend themselves. This sign is expert at remaining objective - the heart and mind are not allowed to mingle in the realm of Aquarius! As with Leo, the water bearer is hardworking and intensely driven to succeed. Generally speaking, Aquarians have more physical and mental energy than the average Leo.

Aquarians work tirelessly without need for recognition. Like the lion, they often end up in professions that allow them to leave a positive impact on society. Whereas Leo lives by a personal code, the water bearer adopts a Universal one. Aquarians are magnetic, enthusiastic, fearless and engaged. The water bearer is perhaps more progressive and less emotional than the lion. Both signs are social butterflies, but Aquarians are usually not as warm. This works to their advantage, however, because they have no problem walking away from unhealthy relationships/circumstances.
