Retrograde is a definite buzzword in the astrology world, especially concerning planet Mercury. To be very clear, planets in retrograde are not actually spinning backwards – it is entirely an optical illusion as seen from Earth. Backwards motion appears to happen when Earth passes slower moving planets in the outer solar system. In astrology, this illusion manifests as a sort of “backwards” functioning of the planets and their roles. Click here to learn more about retrograde motion.

In classic astrology, Pluto rules fixed water sign Scorpio. (You may recall that Saturn is currently transiting Scorpio but normally rules Capricorn. Pluto is currently transiting Capricorn but, as stated, normally rules Scorpio. This interplanetary phenomenon is known in astrology as mutual reception.) Pluto is concerned with transformation, rebirth, fear, obsession, destruction, power and control. Every time we make huge, life-altering decisions, Plutonian energy is present. Pluto represents shift. Through Pluto our psyche is symbolically destroyed and renewed.

Since November 2008, Pluto has been in cardinal earth sign Capricorn. This transit has so far been, and will only continue to be, extremely powerful. Capricorn is the patriarch of the zodiac, ruler of all things structural, institutional and societal. Pluto’s transit through this sign therefore manifests as a total overhaul of how we live together on Earth. In particular, we can expect to see continued changes in regards to the economy, government and ecological sustainability. Pluto is currently helping us to uncover rampant hypocrisy, corruption and greed embedded in the framework of our failing systems. Indeed it is undeniable that the way we are doing things now is simply not working.

The ultimate goal of Pluto in Capricorn is to reorganize society completely so that we may once again live in harmony with the natural cycles of our planet and the greater Universe. Pluto uses extremes in order to goad us into thoroughly questioning our blind trust in institutions. The mainstream media reports so regularly on heretofore hidden, quasi-governmental scandals that I daresay we have become nearly desensitized. Pluto in Capricorn, ruler of hierarchies and authority, is poised to initiate the fall of the mighty. This dynamic placement will deliver reform by shedding light on truths that have long been suppressed. Now we begin to destroy that which is destroying.

Pluto in Capricorn will only continue to expose the lies of wealthy men clinging to their power: those who were once viewed as mentors and leaders. We are asked to examine the great imbalance between masculine and feminine energy in our institutions. Additionally, issues surrounding debt and money will be magnified during this time. We see now that sometimes the way we spend our dollar is our only vote. Let’s put people before profit! Whatever happened to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? I am confident that by the end of this transit, we will have returned to self-empowerment, sustainable living and ancient wisdom.

SO! Pluto is retrograde about 6 months out of the year. For the first time since April 14, Pluto will turn direct on Monday. What can we expect? This is a time of epiphanies and recognition of that which has been lurking in the subconscious. You may have felt things heating up over the last week. This shift is actually quite intense. Our focus now is on our personal power and biggest ambitions. Perhaps you have been feeling stuck, or lost deep within the mind. Expect changes to be more direct now rather than internal. We are more willing and able to make these changes happen rather than feel bitter about changes that we feel have been forced upon us. On a global scale, we will also begin to see the rate of change pick up speed once again.

From Molly Hall:

What’s happening, with new rules and regulations skewed toward corporations, mirrors what happened in pre-Colonial America, the last time Pluto was in Capricorn … This is just the beginning of a transit that many believe will be a rebirth for the planet. Pluto strips away what’s false or superficial, so that the authentic can come to life. …We can speculate on what will happen, but Pluto’s nature is to push us past the comfort zone, and into the primal untapped places within.

Often the endings and beginnings brought about by Pluto are a result of spiritual growth. Pluto asks us to reach deep within the soul to understand our true purpose. As with Saturn, nothing slips by Pluto. He will not allow you to evolve without seeing yourself as you really are, flaws and all. Pluto’s greatest lesson is that fear is your only roadblock. He encourages us to have unconditional trust in the karmic process. Nothing about this planet is superficial or simple. Plutonian missions are notoriously complex, dark and intimidating.

YOGA CHALLENGE

Pigeon pose, eka pada rajakapotasana, is a lovely way to connect your body to the earth. Think of this pose as an anchor, a binding to the mast, if you will. Once in the pose, it is important to remember that your work is not over, as tempting as it is to simply sink into the mat. Whatever foot is forward, this hip needs to keep moving down towards the earth; the hip connected to the back foot should keep moving out, away from the body. Relax the upper back in between the shoulder blades as you extend the heart and, more importantly, the belly button forward in space. Press the back knee down into the mat and try to drag it forward, energetically speaking. This action releases tension in the lumbar spine. Don’t forget to breeeeathe.
