Every New Moon falls in the same sign as the current sign of the Sun. This is precisely what makes it a New Moon. For example, last month when the Sun was in Leo, the New Moon fell in Leo. Now that the Sun has transited to Virgo, the New Moon is in Virgo. The Full Moon falls in the opposing sign. Virgo’s opposite sign on the zodiac wheel (180 degrees across) is Pisces, so this month’s Full Moon will be in Pisces. Quarter Moons land in between on the squares; Moon cycles therefore always fall together in either the fixed, mutable or cardinal signs. The Moon phases this month will all be in the mutable signs.

The New Moon in mutable earth sign Virgo marks the kickoff for the coming month and the official end of the Leo cycle. In classic astrology, Virgo concerns health, daily work, routines, practicality and order. You may already be feeling the shift from the heat of the fiery Leo cycle. Virgo is ruled by Mercury, so expect life to move rapidly this month; however this is tempered in part by the presence of earth energy. The transition is not exactly a retreat - a more apt description would be a settling, a quieting.

You may now spend more time attending to details and organizing your daily life, including perhaps a focus on your health. Virgo thrives on the satisfaction of a completed to-do list; a ticking clock; an entire day spent working; a healthy meal; de-cluttering; learning a new subject; carefully reading a theoretical text; a return to a regular schedule. When balanced, Virgo energy is analytical, methodical, thoughtful and devoted. More than anything, the Virgo cycle asks us to work on our priorities. We are encouraged to take pride in our work and intellectual capacities.

The New Moon is a chance to recreate ourselves. This phase is like a newborn child: impressionable, vulnerable and wide-eyed. What will you do to set the tone for the coming month? What projects have you been meaning to launch? What changes need to be made? This is a fresh start, a slate wiped clean. Words, thoughts and actions that happen now are seeds planted for harvest at the Full Moon in two weeks.

Often this time of the year heralds the first wave of stress after a long carefree summer. Make this New Moon an opportunity to remind yourself of what is truly important in your life. Stay centered, stay calm. Imbalanced Virgo energy can be overly critical, self-conscious and internalized. Turn this energy into constructive, outward action - whatever you need to do to feel accomplished and happy! Another pitfall with this transit is seriousness. Remember all that we have learned over the past month from Leo.

On a personal note, this New Moon has been, once again, quite symbolic for me. I start a new job tomorrow!

YOGA CHALLENGE

This is an excellent time to focus on the mind rather than the body. Traditionally, yoga was never practiced on the New Moon since our brahmacharya or life force is supposed to be at its weakest during this time. In accordance with this observation, try extending your daily meditation - or simply picking up meditation as a daily practice if you haven’t already. The Virgo cycle will have you working very hard, both physically and mentally. Do yourself a favor and settle into your favorite seated position, eyes closed, breathing deep and sweet - even if it’s just for a few minutes.
