Mercury transits to cardinal air sign Libra after a relatively short stay in mutable earth sign Virgo. The way we speak, write and present ourselves to the world will take on a more balanced, diplomatic tone. Think mindfulness and peacekeeping.

The cardinal modality of this transit can be seen in the basic nature of our focus at this time: peace within the community. More than anything else, Libra is concerned with harmony. Mercury in Virgo directed our conversations towards work, health and routines. Libra energy is still quite rational yet more flowing, being as it is in the air element family. In astrology air energy is associated with groups of people working together. Mercury in Virgo kicked off the Virgo cycle, helping to get our personal life in order. Now we move away from the Self and begin to examine our relationships. I have known many Libras to express a deep need to be surrounded / partnered with others.

Our communication style is outward bound, with an emphasis on making and keeping good rapport with friends. With Mercury in Virgo, our focus was on getting the point across in the most efficient manner possible. Libra energy asks us to achieve balance with our surroundings. This placement of Mercury should slightly alleviate what might have been a very mentally active period over the last two weeks. We are asked now to give an honest look at where we stand in our circle. When taken to the extreme, Mercury in Libra can manifest as indecision and over-compromise. Libra has a reputation for being too concerned with group opinion, to the point where this energy can become vacillating and loyal to all sides at once. This is why some Libras can appear superficial. They are so afraid of offending someone or making enemies that they will attempt to please everyone at once by simply having no opinions at all or readily agreeing with everyone. This stems not only from fear of rocking the boat, but also from a genuine and precious ability to see the viewpoints of many people at once.

Libra, ruled by Venus, is typically associated with beauty, aesthetic and art. When balanced, many Libras enjoy a certain level of tastefulness in their immediate surroundings. I have also observed that Libras often love fashion and all things related to the cosmetic world. Libra style, whether in writing or clothing choice or manner of speech, is understated, simplistic and classy. Libra, like Virgo, loves to keep things clean and straightforward - no frills, no gaudiness.

With Mercury in Libra, we are better able to ponder our relationships from an intellectual standpoint. For those who struggle with becoming too emotionally invested in the natural changes of social life, the comings and goings of friends and lovers, this placement may greatly help you to stay centered and reasonable. This transit will ask you to confront friendship or partnership issues that may have been previously ignored. Libra energy will effectively guide you through any negotiations. The challenge here is to remain assertive!

When balanced, Mercury in Libra delivers a style of communication that is calm, sensible and refined. When balanced, we come into every situation seeking virtue and justice. When imbalanced, we might be submissive or insecure. Experiencing a new level of clarity in our relationships can feel so refreshing that we might cling to pleasantness and apparent stability in an effort to avoid reconciling opposition. Remember that it is possible to accommodate others while still respecting our own needs.

Keywords for this transit are grace and fairness. We choose our words carefully now, keeping in mind the old saying that we attract more bees with honey than vinegar. If balanced, we will see the true quality of our connection to others and the way in which our words affect these relationships. Mercury in Libra asks us to consider: does my message aid or detract from the flow of communication with others? We are encouraged to put ourselves in many different pairs of shoes.

According to Astology.com,

Words should uplift and make the interactions we have with others more sweet and lovely. This is the way Venus would have it. Of course, while Mercury is in the sign of Justice, we’ll have no qualms about speaking out against inequality or lack of fairness in any given situation.

YOGA CHALLENGE

Throughout the day, our body alternates between breathing through the right and left side of the nose. This switches every hour or so, depending on the individual. To achieve temporary balance on both sides, try a breathing exercise (prana) known as nadi shodhana, alternate nostril breathing. Before starting, take note of which nostril is dominant. (The right side typically denotes masculine energy, the left feminine.) Sitting in a comfortable position with the left hand resting in your lap, take the right hand and bend the “peace fingers,” the pointer and middle finger, so that only the thumb, ring and pinky finger remain straight. (Another option is to have the peace fingers resting on the third eye chakra.) Take a deep inhale through both nostrils and then, with your thumb pressing gently on the outside of the right nostril, exhale through the left nostril. Take an inhale now through the left nostril and then, lifting the thumb from the right nostril and pressing the ring and pinky finger to the outside of the left nostril, exhale out the right. This is how it will flow: exhale, inhale, switch sides. It’s always a good idea to blow your nose before pranic activities! After a few minutes, take a deep breath once again through both nostrils and notice any changes that have occurred.
