The way we speak, write and present ourselves to the world now takes on a more detached tone with Mercury moving out of Capricorn and into fixed air sign Aquarius. This transit will give you the confidence to finally say everything that has been slowly ripening within. When Mercury transits an air sign, we are expressive and observant. Aquarius is active, community-oriented and energetic - maybe even to the point of mental exhaustion. This transit will help you get in touch with your inner child; expect to feel curious, light and ready for adventure.

It took me awhile to fully understand Aquarius. On one hand, this sign can be incredibly stubborn, almost forceful, especially when it comes to ideas related to philosophy, religion, society or other overarching, intangible areas of life. On the other hand, there are few people more open, tolerant or excitable than the water bearer. Aquarians’ natural acceptance of all people and ideas makes them easy to talk with and often excellent advice givers, as they are especially adept at remaining objective in any given conversation. Mercury in Aquarius will allow you to harness this sharp intellect and lightning wit. It may be challenging, however, to stay connected to both the heart and the mind; as a diehard rationalist, the water bearer leaves little room for sentiment. Aquarian energy is scientific, analytical, progressive and inventive. From astrologer Joy Pond:

Relationships with siblings, neighbors, classmates, and casual friends may become more prominent in your life now … This may also be a restless time [because] it is difficult to turn the thinking process off when it would be better to relax! It is an especially fruitful time for any endeavor that requires dealing with words, ideas, facts and figures.

When Mercury, ruler of the mind, teams up with Aquarius, the non-conformist and resident rebel of the zodiac, we have the perfect opportunity to cultivate forward-thinking ideas that push the boundaries of reality and social acceptability. I like to visualize Aquarian energy as breaking free. This is not the time to design a new routine; now is the time to smash everything to bits and try something radical. Unlike Capricorn, lover of tradition and customs, the water bearer could not care less about what or how other people are doing. Aquarians are serious about one thing: change. The water bearer has both the energy and the vision to accomplish anything; perhaps the only missing elements are precision and patience. In the midst of great passion and haste, messes are bound to happen.

Mercury in Aquarius is anything but rigid or old-fashioned. Expect your thirst for knowledge and original ideas to be unquenchable now. You may find it difficult to communicate clearly and concisely. Aquarians are notorious for hopping all over the place, conversationally speaking. Another danger lies in coming off as cold or uncaring to others. From Evolving Door Astrology:

This can be a time when you start to see old familiar situations in new ways, giving you a fresh perspective on things. This planetary energy is not likely to be supportive if you need to take a gentle or sensitive approach to personal interaction, however, since you may be more tempted to just say what needs to be said and let the chips fall where they may.

The water bearer is so masterful when it comes to staying centered and reasonable that the ego might see this as an opportunity to puff up. Aquarians are rightfully proud! One more from Evolving Door Astrology:

Mercury in Aquarius brings … communication that strives for unprecedented breadth and height – even to the point of adopting an “ivory tower” mentality.

Mercury in Aquarius is spirited and spontaneous. It might feel like there are so many things to be excited about that you just can’t sit still or keep quiet - and that’s ok! Now that we’re neck-deep in the Capricorn cycle, we have been powerfully reminded of where and when life has become excessive or out of control; Mercury in Aquarius is the first whisper of revolution, a breaking down of the structures we are building with such determination at this very moment!

Allow yourself to focus on wholeness. Mercury in Capricorn was perhaps too cautious. Now it will be challenging just to complete one thought or sentence. Aquarian energy is potentially reckless and volatile. We are no longer concerned with being polite or conventional. Risk-taking feels natural and deeply satisfying now. One saving grace for this headstrong sign is Aquarians’ genuine and abiding concern for the welfare of all people. Unlike Leo, the water bearer’s opposite sign, Aquarius rejects the ego as a roadblock to true harmony. Aquarius lives for the success of the world, not the individual. This is precisely what makes the water bearer appear so unorthodox to outsiders.

Mercury in Aquarius is truly magical. We have enough mental energy to generate ideas for the next millennium AND power our bodies to do the necessary work. With Mercury in Capricorn we are prone to dwelling, holding grudges and thinking ourselves into tight, unforgiving places. Aquarius destroys these tendencies like a mighty wind knocking down an old barn. The water bearer is a social creature, so get ready to put yourself out there! I have no doubt that communication will flow quite freely. Expect to have long, meandering conversations about anything and everything. Stay tuned in to the emotional body of the collective, and remember all that we have learned from Capricorn about the power of conservation and diligence!
