It’s a short transit folks, but quite appropriate since Gemini spins at breakneck speed and I’ll be damned if we’re not ready to say goodbye to Mercury’s trudging retrograde through Taurus. Mercury rules both Gemini and Virgo. In astrology, we say that he is returning “home” now.
There is something undeniably raw about Mercury in Gemini. The twins are like unedited manuscripts, full to bursting with little notes and additions and hurriedly scrawled advice. To the untrained eye, Gemini appears calm, cool and collected. Yet hiding just under the surface of this carefully manicured facade is a bundle of nervous energy. Mercury in Gemini talks so much and often with dramatic effect that he inevitably exaggerates (for the sake of a good story, of course) and is then forced to cover up, go back on his word or otherwise add one story on top of another, in the process only continuing to talk more, digging the hole ever deeper!
Despite his motormouth, Gemini is a cautious and serious creature. The twin soul is cloaked and veiled – solemn, private, discreet. We must actively combat insincerity with Mercury in Gemini. This is not to say that Gemini is phony by nature. Just remember that he casts powerful spells in the realm of social tact to keep the true Self well guarded. As you might imagine, this is the source of the twins’ notorious aloofness. How else could Mercury in Gemini play so many parts at once, and with such excellency? By remaining detached and keeping his lips in check. Gemini types openly admit that they don’t usually stay in relationships, jobs or physical locations for very long. As he is infatuated with mystery, Gemini becomes instantly intrigued by (addicted to) certain people and ideas, but just as quickly as these feelings arise, he is known to drop them as though nothing ever happened.
Mercury in Gemini can be so detail-oriented that the big picture gets overlooked. But upon which details is he fixating? I find that what begins as intellectual/psychological analysis ends in a dizzying labyrinth of mental hoop-jumping and stitching together of an endless texture and variety of thoughts from every corner of the memory, all of which is then carefully refused to the initial analysis. See, Mercury in Gemini is actually very talented when it comes to decoding his surroundings and the people around him. Whatever insights he gains, however, are often immediately distorted by an insistence on scrutinizing everything to death!
It’s constant warfare inside the Gemini brain. One twin wants to be loved and adored, the other can’t wait to fly away and never come back. I think the twins fear offending others. They know very well how often and how quickly they fluctuate and struggle to communicate what it feels like, what they need, what is happening, who they are becoming moment to moment. The best advice that I could possibly give during the Gemini season is to relax and breathe. Don’t think so much, everything is ok 🙂
Although he revolves in tight concentricity, never straying too far from the familiar, Mercury in Gemini will make you want to travel, move or go (back) to school. This is one of many contradictions in this constellation. Gemini routinely pushes himself out of his comfort zone to temporarily slake an undying, everlasting thirst for experience. Mercury in Gemini is also our resident wordsmith and scholar. This is a great time for writing of all kinds, reading, word games, puzzles, spoken art forms, inventive thought, technological knowhow, music, singing. As with any Gemini transit (but especially this one), there will be a special emphasis on communication - what and how. This transit demarcates one of the busiest periods of the year, if not the most. We probably won’t have the time or desire to regularly practice centering modalities like meditation, so good luck finding moments throughout the day which afford respite and tranquility, no matter how brief.
