The First Quarter marks the halfway point between the New and Full Moon. The First and Last Quarter Moon phases occur when the Moon squares the Sun at a 90 degree angle. In this particular phase, the Sun in fixed water sign Scorpio will square the Moon in fixed air sign Aquarius. From the Earth, the “right side” of the Moon is illuminated. The Moon will rise at noon, peak at dusk and set at midnight.
This phase is a checkpoint: what aspects of our initiatives have been successful thus far? Where do we need to work harder? It’s as though we are creeping to the high point of a rollercoaster, represented by the Full Moon, a time when all undertakings are fully realized and answers to lingering questions brought to the fore. The Moon encourages you now to scope out flaws in the foundation laid with the New Moon Solar Eclipse in Scorpio. Are your ventures built to last?
The waxing light of the Moon symbolizes a return to total awareness. This is the best time to tweak and improve upon existing plans. At every Full Moon we conclude all that we have set out to do at the New Moon, so the week between the First Quarter Moon and the Full Moon is a very powerful time. If you have been diligent, expect to see your ideas come to fruition now.
Squares mean change. We have reached a corner and must choose a new direction. The building energy and excitement you may feel now is there to inspire you and encourage decisive action, calculated risk-taking, networking and deepened commitment to personal growth. The Moon is asking you to gather yourself. This phase falls in fixed signs, meaning that the most attractive path now will be one that is permanent. Our intention now is to sustain and fortify. This is not necessarily a time of definitive endings and beginnings - we are in between, working diligently without glancing up, fully submersed in our journey.
The water bearer is community-minded, often very talkative and social; the scorpion prefers peaceful, solitary spaces, like a cat sitting quietly in a dark nook. With the New Moon Solar Eclipse in Scorpio, all that we set in motion was wrought from the gut and soul, deep within our being. The water bearer’s duty is to test this construct: do our plans leave room for others, or is it a strictly personal agenda, applicable only to the Self? The scorpion, when left unchecked, would rather remain inside, tucked away from the surface of life. Aquarius ensures that we communicate and share what’s on our mind. In so doing, we further crystallize our intentions. This is a great lesson for the scorpion: talking to others and allowing them to gain insight to our thoughts allows us to come out of the bubble of the Self for a moment as well as strengthen our commitments.
When the Moon transits an air sign, social and mental energy runs high. This is a good time to catch up with friends, write letters and finish up any projects or tasks that involve groups of people. Expect others to be more stubborn, loud and messy than usual if imbalanced. The water bearer can get so caught up thinking of other people and how to best serve them that the smaller details, such as cleanliness, may get left behind. If balanced, enjoy this brief respite from what is sure to be an otherwise emotionally charged month ahead of us. Use this breezy energy to go exploring by yourself; make some experimental art; write down all your rambling thoughts; get lost in a book; meet new people; hike near big hills/mountains; practice yogic heart openers.
