Disclaimer: the Sun sign is a much-celebrated yet oversimplified astrological element, usually given more significance than it deserves. Remember – you are a whole soup of planets!

The Capricorn season has been one long groan, or is that just me? The sea goat practically hibernates. We’re deep in the upper echelon of the zodiac wheel, next stop Aquarius. Now we break free, baby.

This next cycle is all about living creatively and going on adventures, alone or with others, doesn’t matter. Energy levels are up up UP – Aquarius is animated, excitable, down for anything.

Aquarius is the non-conformist of the zodiac. First and foremost, Aquarius absolutely must follow his own path, regardless of whether or not it is popular. The water bearer doesn’t care what other people are doing. Now is the time for all things alternative: a new eclectic group of friends, unorthodox spiritual or philosophical trajectories, non-traditional medicine, aliens who want to party!? We will meet others with joy, especially those from circles with which we wouldn’t normally overlap.

The water bearer’s opposite sign is Leo. You may recall that the Sun rules Leo, so he is “at home” here. This means that the Sun is now in his detriment in Aquarius, 180 degrees away from home. The Sun and his homeboy Leo rule the ego, so you could say that Aquarius, as the opposite sign, is kind of the “anti-ego,” but this doesn’t mean that Aquarius doesn’t struggle with the ego because he definitely does. With the Sun in Aquarius, we just desire connection to people/ideas outside the Self. Aquarius wants to fortify the Universal intellect; spread knowledge; empower, uplift, revitalize; think community.

Lest I get carried away, Aquarius does have a shadow side and it is - surprise! - his ego, although he would hate to admit resembling Leo in any way. Opposite signs on the zodiac wheel still have much in common. Under the influence of fixed energy, Aquarius can be stubborn, believing that his way of doing things is the best and only way. The lion lives from the heart, but Aquarius is detached, even aloof, in love with solidarity/solitude and the power of intelligence. The Aquarian mantra is I know. I know! But the balanced water bearer doesn’t find the Self nearly as fascinating or meritorious as humanity in its splendiferous wholeness. Because of this, Aquarius carries a striking internal confidence that Leo often lacks. Funny how that is; the less we think about the Self, the better off we are.

Sometimes Aquarius needs to prove/defend himself against every little thing, but I think that’s just part of his Universal code, where everything is everything, interconnected, a cosmic battle of right and wrong, a fight until death against THE MAN and all the things he knows are not true. Yes, Aquarius can be ice cold. He has no problem walking away from relationships/circumstances that displease him. But don’t get me wrong, I love it. It’s this passion and enthusiasm that make Aquarius so magnetic. The water bearer ultimately wants to leave a positive impact on society, who can be mad about that?

‘Twas a bottomless spin through Capricorn…a fruitful period of planning, organizing and just gettin’ shit done, yet still…it made me heavy, like I was being dragged across the floor with huge weights covering my entire body. But now we get to smash it all to pieces. I’m celebrating this Aquarian arrival by traveling to Asia for yoga school (so excited ahhhhhh!). Mars is in Scorpio but emotional ickiness is on hiatus when Aquarius comes to town - the heart does not enter easily in this realm! The water bearer is an objective creature so you better believe his mind rules supreme. Fearless, engaged, progressive - things are looking up. Just keep an eye on the retrogrades in Mercury and Jupiter. Otherwise we’re good for awhile. Big sigh of relief my friends! Unleash your beauty on the world!

Disclaimer: The Sun sign is a much-celebrated, often oversimplified astrological element. Remember – you embody a whole soup of planets!

Ever since Venus moved into Scorpio a few weeks ago, I’ve been emotionally exhausted. And, once again, I underestimated the power of the Sagittarius cycle and its real purpose, which would be the illumination of TRUTH. This insane little planet hurtling through space seems to be fraying quickly. Every day we descend exponentially deeper into a pool of chaos and violence. More than ever before it’s imperative that we SHINE our light. We’re settling in to the upper echelon of the zodiac wheel, next stop Capricorn. Deep breaths now, rest your bones here awhile.

Sagittarius and Libra both turned it up a notch this year. Just when you think you know what’s coming, these celestial entities grabbed me by my soul’s collar and said NOPE, try again, my friend. So I’m feeling a little more drained than I thought I would be at this point, but who doesn’t love surprises eh?

The Capricorn cycle heralds the Divine Masculine. As an earth sign, Capricorn also grounds and stabilizes us in whatever/wherever we happen to be in life. Since he is the last earth sign of the zodiac wheel, I see this phase as resolute culmination, the last pouring of the concrete, if you will. Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, the iron fist of the solar system. The sea goat is therefore often one to believe that things absolutely must be done a certain way. More precisely, they must be done the conventional way. You may notice that the people who enter your life at this time are hung up on this notion. Capricorn understands better than anyone that we do our best work when we are deliberate yet efficient, but the greatest challenge now is simply remembering to smile and shake it off. It is very important to keep it light during this cycle.

The sea goat enjoys deep conversations as long as the subject material is not too intangible. I like to visualize this cardinal sign as an axis, a foundation, the face of a clock - anything that draws us to what is. Capricorn is a realist. What could or should be does not interest the goat. There is certain comfort in knowing what to expect and planning accordingly. You can see why the goat has a reputation for being a little boring. This stiffness stems from the way Capricorns carry themselves, as they are not prone to being bubbly or outwardly emotive. This is not to say that Capricorns don’t like to party – if anything, they go really hard and then feel the most guilty about it.

Watch for a tendency to be critical of the Self and others. Capricorns set the bar high then struggle to understand why everyone else can’t keep up. The goat would do well to have more empathy and compassion for the Self. Embrace structure and discipline as worthy tools for reorganizing your life and providing a bit of direction, but don’t ignore your heart in the process.

Unlike Sagittarius, the goat is willing and able to move slowly…maybe too slowly. If you are like me and have heavy earth energy in your chart, this time of year probably signals hibernation. Like clockwork, when the Sun moves into Capricorn, I hit the sheets bear-human style. Overcoming inertia…not impossible, but pretty damn close.

This is the time of year to just DO IT – no second thoughts. Dive right in. Whether that means welcoming some discipline into your life or surrounding yourself with people who embody the positive qualities of the sea goat, smile and accept this gift knocking at your soul’s door. Of course this is also Christmastime for many humans around the world. What better way to honor the sea goat’s love of tradition and ritual than by enacting our own, year after year? My only prescription is surrender through laughter. Open up, everyone. We’re still here, trying to figure this shit out. Big belly laughs. Put your feet up next to the people you love. Wrap yourself in a huge furry blanket by the fire.

Feeling bedraggled after a heavy spin through Scorpio? Even the thought of talking about it exhausts me. Every year it’s the same, downward strokes in the soul’s muddy bottom. And every time it ends, we rise up weak and moaning yet gloriously victorious. Tears of gratitude for the simple things, the simple loves, no regrets. What an adventure life continues to be. Exhale completely and step in to the light, my friends. We’re soaring through the upper echelon of the zodiac wheel, next stop Sagittarius.

We’ve been deep, deep within, swirling in the darkness, teeth grittin, icy bones clinging to remnants of emotional wreckage. The diver surfaces from below, gasping for breath, utterly changed. Weary friend, turn toward this new horizon. Sagittarius the Grandiose is crackling into view. The karmic purpose behind incarnation as a Sagittarius is expansion through higher learning and spirituality.

Eternal optimist, diehard idealist, potential escapist. Always looking on the bright side, conscious blindness. A propensity for denial, running from the shadow, telling the Self whatever it needs to hear in order to uphold the illusion of pure happiness. Sagittarius is so intent on having the best time ever that he’ll gleefully ignore that which rankles. A wide grin and booming laugh as he shakes his head and moves on, always moving. Sagittarius craves experiences. Release and explore. Prepare for a quickening – mutable energy moves rapidly. I visualize Sagittarius as an excitable bonfire on a winter night; a noisy circle of humans in motion; a comet exponentially gaining speed; rainbows and sunshine; a holiday party; a great success story; a glass half full; a child bursting with life; noise and color spiraling forever out into space.

The Sagittarius cycle is an especially active one. As a general rule, we need lots of physical and mental stimulation during this time. Leave room for the unexpected. We may become bored and restless with even the smallest of pauses. However, accomplishing a lot in a short amount of time is very possible if we can effectively channel this (excessive) energy. The archer’s greatest challenge: slowing down long enough to take a full breath and acknowledge the details, or make a decision.

Unlike Scorpio, the centaur archer is not typically drawn to dark or morbid subjects. Sagittarius lives in the light and bliss existing all around us. He has unmistakable charm and enthusiasm - hard not to love. In fact, the centaur finds it difficult to turn off the smile and get in touch with heavier aspects of life. Sagittarius would do well to embrace responsibility and discipline, rather than reject them in favor of half-baked shortcuts. The archer aims high and rarely misses, however.

It feels silly to read and write about this transit, as it is definitely best experienced by being in it. This weekend will deliver a fiery elevation unto this earth full of people lost and weeping. Take a breath not for any particular tragedy, but for pain. The pain that you yourself have experienced, now and before. The lessons you’ve learned from pain. The way pain clears you like a searing knife.

My only prescription is dancing. Stamp your feet, everyone. You fucking made it. Laugh until the tears come. Purple and white stars whizzing through the mind-galaxy. Joy to you.

Disclaimer: The Sun sign is a much-celebrated, often oversimplified astrological element. Remember – you embody a whole soup of planets!

I had many ideas about what the Virgo cycle would herald and yet the Goddess of Harvest still managed to surprise me. Do you feel like you got tossed into a wind turbine? Change is afoot! Seems like everyone is moving, getting new jobs, going to school, breaking up, generally gettin’ after it, whatever it is. This last month has been insanely busy. Indeed, Virgo gave us a peek into what the rest of the year holds. Life is not going to slow down, you lovely people. Whatever adjustments you made (or are still making) during the last few weeks will serve as a foundation for all that follows in 2016. We’re soaring through the upper echelon of the zodiac wheel, next stop Libra.

Let’s look at the greater context. Libra is situated between Virgo, who has proven to be a serious powerhouse, and Scorpio, creature of the night. Think of Libra as a resting spot - she’ll provide us with a relatively quiet period in which we can assimilate all the changes we’re making and also gear up for the scorpion realm. I say “relatively” quiet because I don’t think it will be at all. However, we can balance heavy schedules and responsibilities by retreating to a peaceful nook. Libra prefers grace and beauty in her surroundings, so grab your work and head outside. We can zone in to the task at hand while still satisfying Libra’s aesthetic needs.

Libra showers us with abundance only after we dutifully contemplate. Much has already been set in place since our rebirth in the spring, and now it’s time to reconfigure whatever’s not running smoothly. Insight is not always forthcoming - you are required to meditate and be honest with yourself and others! We’ll have to think while we work, because that’s just the pace of the Universe right now, but it won’t be a problem. Seize this opportunity to sort out your thoughts calmly or you’ll be thrown back into the mix feeling disarrayed. The good news is that Libra is not asking us to isolate as we process - she is the Goddess of Love, after all, and she doesn’t operate very well alone. Libra cultivates harmony.

I like to visualize Libra as a diplomat or mediator, smoothing out all the wrinkles. Libra has strong morals and enjoys actively participating in social justice. I have also observed that Libras are (traditionally) logical types who do not believe in astrology! This is due in part to the cardinal nature of this sign. Libra wants to make sure that her beliefs are practical and virtuous so that they may be of use to many people from all walks of life, not just herself.

To Libra, relationships are a mirror. Negotiating can be uncomfortable, but the alternative – internalizing negative feelings and remaining silent – is ultimately much more uncomfortable in the end. That’s what I remember struggling with most at this time last year: speaking up and holding my ground. Healthy confrontation comes naturally to some, but to others just the thought of verbalizing Truth makes us want to hide in the deepest, darkest cave. We have another Lunar Eclipse in Aries fast approaching, so I encourage you to get ahead of the curve and say what you need to say before something/someone else pulls the rug out. Of course this doesn’t mean that you need to be aggressive, in fact Libra is known for her classy communication. I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to open the throat chakra and let your words fly out like doves: full of peace and compassion.

Libra is the sign of the scale. The scale is not only a symbol of balance but also of decision-making and listening. Before “weighing in,” the scale gathers as much information as possible so that the final decision reflects careful deliberation. This inclination can make it more difficult to reach said decision when the time comes. Because Libra is a natural counselor, she recognizes many viewpoints at once and may ascribe to opposing beliefs simultaneously. Or Libra may purport to not have an opinion and thus communicate ineffectively with passive-aggressive tactics, when in reality she has known the entire time exactly how she feels. This stems from her remarkable tolerance, which is always a crowd favorite. Libra is a social goddess who may have difficulty being alone for long periods of time. When balanced, Libra sees all relationships as opportunities to work on the relationship with the Self. When taken to the extreme, this inclination, coupled with Venusian energy, can manifest as superficiality, judgment or egocentric behavior.

My intuition tells me that this cycle will be intense. This may seem to contradict what I’ve just written, but really my goal is to prescribe nature and reflection as a way to counteract all the commotion. I do not think that it is impossible to stay centered in the midst of chaos. It will take strength and courage and honesty. Stand close to the people who make you feel golden, invincible, validated, tranquil. We’re moving down the line of chakras, now centered at the sacral chakra – svadhisthana. Perhaps this transit will find you learning more about the chakras and how to align them.

An appropriate name for this much-celebrated, often oversimplified astrological element would therefore be “Earth Sign.” Remember – you embody a whole soup of planets!

What we’re coming out of - the Leo cycle, that is - has many faces, as do all creatures in the zodiac realm. One facet of Leo is the playful child. This is Leo at his most pure and innocent: frolicking in the sunshine, free of cares, determined to have the most fun possible. Sometimes Leo is the Sun King, ruling with equals parts might and compassion. And then there’s Leo the tyrant, a child who’s lost control of his temper, ego run amuck. Unfortunately we’ve seen more of Leo’s shadow than his light over the last few weeks. I think we were all waiting patiently for the sun to rise with majesty and shed some good vibrations on what has otherwise been a thoroughly strange and somber summer. Here I am again, hoping and wishing for definitive change. However I am even more confident that this upcoming cycle will be amazing. I’ve talked a lot in recent posts about reframing Virgo - she’s not an uptight secretary, she’s a serious badass with total agency over her body and life story.

Virgo is ruled by Mercury, the fleet-footed Messenger God. This means that the Virgo life is a fast one, full of incredible change. So many people around me are moving, quitting their jobs, going (back) to school, leaving their partners, doing deep emotional healing work, etc. I cannot emphasize enough that this period we are in - this year, this era, this moment right now - is a time of complete metamorphosis. In the body, Virgo rules the sympathetic nervous system and lower digestive tract. She lives deep within: maintaining, monitoring, assimilating.

The Sun last transited Virgo from Aug 23 - Sep 22, 2014. Any themes/conflicts that predominated then will now resurface. Because she falls in the middle rather than at the beginning of the zodiac wheel, Virgo restructures. Much has already been set in place since our rebirth in the spring, and now it’s time to reconfigure whatever’s not running smoothly. Many will now return to a regular workout schedule, a better diet or, at the very least, a new level of seriousness concerning these issues. If health is already a priority, this transit will have you perfecting through practice…lots and lots and lots of practice. Yes, we have cleaning and polishing to do, but perhaps our greatest responsibility is to simply let change happen around us without tensing up or attempting to control these dynamic shifts. As autumn eventually fades and polar winds blow across the fields, Virgo will watch all her crops wither with impressive calm. She will return and pick it all up from the beginning in the following year - as will you, as will I.

I’m especially excited about this cycle because Jupiter has just entered Virgo. This whole year will be Virgo-themed. But why Virgo? Why does she inspire me at this juncture in spacetime over all the others? She is dependable. Virgo hates giving up on people and situations as she is so devoted in character. This cannot necessarily be said for the other creatures at the beginning of the zodiac wheel. They’re all wonderful, but they’re primordial beings who struggle greatly with the fundamentals. Of course Virgo has her own challenges, but she’s got a leg up on the rest. Virgo is constantly working on herself. She craves continual improvement, on all planes of reality. Although she may be reserved at first, you will soon find that there is a vast, undiscovered world within her.

More so than with other signs, the difference between a healthy and unhealthy Virgo is undeniably stark. When imbalanced, Virgo rejects her beloved routines and rituals. Without these, she is dragged along by the relentless currents of her mind, at times submerged, face down, not even trying to right herself because she’s tired of caring, tired of attempting to fix her life and failing repeatedly. She finds sweet relief in being out of control in body, mind and spirit after working for so long to cultivate principles which have proven to be perpetually just out of reach. Virgo surrounds herself with good company. Inevitably these well-meaning souls come along and start to dig her out, only to discover that Virgo is an intransigent goddess when she’s flailing. I’m spelling it all out so that you’re ready, if need be. The thing about Virgo is that all her battles are with herself. When she’s lost, she sits up in the mind and rarely comes down. She is a unique soul with a vivid inner world. Each Virgo is specially molded by widely varying interests. She risks everything when she no longer recognizes her own brilliance. This is our collective task, no matter how well grounded you are: come back to the body. Not just that - come back to the body with love and acceptance.

I say that a lot - what is the significance, what does it mean to come back to the body? For some it comes naturally, an abiding sense of home and security embedded in the flesh. For others it is the work of an entire lifetime. At its most basic and yet most profound, coming back to the body means revolution. You create reality. You are made of light. To be out of the body is to ignore its beauty, its potential, its power, its impact as it burns through space. We’re moving down the line of chakras, now centered at the solar plexus and sacral chakra - manipura and svadhisthana. Do some research on these and see what resonates with you, what specific work needs to be done. I’m feeling inspired to add a chakra page to my website. Ok, enough for now my lovely starseeds. You are loved. Namaste.

Disclaimer: when talking about Sun signs, it’s really more accurate to say “the Earth’s relation to the Sun” since the Earth is the one moving. An appropriate name for this much-celebrated, often oversimplified astrological element would therefore be “Earth Sign.” Remember – you embody a whole soup of planets!

If you are a Leo, now comes your Solar Return.

Solar cycle

The Sun in Leo marks the kickoff for the coming month and the official end of the lunar/Cancer cycle. Energy in the crab realm is passive, slow, cautious. This year’s Cancer season heralded much emotional trauma. Now we move to Leo, the would-be king of the zodiac. Prepare for life to pick up even more over the next few weeks. In classic astrology Leo is associated with learning, leisure, recreation, entertainment, children and romance. Leo loves drama and performances of all kinds – and perhaps doing a little shameless performing himself, consciously or not! The focus this month is on enjoyment and expression. Expect to feel more generous and for others to be more generous with you. Leo is notoriously loyal, magnanimous and jovial. When imbalanced, lion energy is stubborn, aggressive, egotistical and loud.

Leo is ruled by the Sun - in astrology we say that the Sun is therefore returning “home” at this time. Due to the literal centrality of the ruling planet (er, star), Leo has a reputation for self-centeredness - I am a star! Rather than seeing this is as problematic, as pure egoism, consider how the Sun in Leo bestows a divine capacity for self-appreciation. The lion is delightfully narcissistic, yes, but Leo has self-serving tendencies because this is precisely how he creates and maintains reality - from the inside out, radiating from the center of the heart. Leo even rules the heart in the human body.

The primordial stage of the zodiac wheel is over. We’ve shoved off into the middle realm - what are you learning?

The axis of identity

Studying the polarities of the zodiac wheel is an effective method to learn more about the signs. You may recall that Aquarius is Leo’s opposite sign, 180 degrees across on the wheel. Leo is Aquarius’ crude yet dazzling predecessor; together they create the axis of identity. Although we must appreciate both ends of the spectrum, I believe it is even more imperative that we regain balance between me vs. we energies on our planet. We can all agree that there is an imbalance in this department, particularly in the West. One solution is to reframes our “stories:” the things we tell the Self about the Self. We don’t have to focus all of our energy on emulating altruistic Aquarian ideals, bashing the lion’s propensity for self-absorbed behavior in the process. We can still glorify me energy, but it must be radically different from what we know. I am speaking in particular of self-love as it is practiced in Buddhism and yoga.

Reframing our collective sense of Self is not a simple task, especially because the Sun in Leo encourages us to be proud of who we are as individuals. It’s quite natural to cultivate an identity firmly rooted in the ego - this is how I am, this is what I do. Celebrating our success as individuals is so commonplace that we rarely stop to question its real value. What would it mean to disassociate our identity from our work? From family? From bank accounts and census data? Who are you when you’re alone? In dreams? In meditation or in yoga? Who are you when you separate the Self from the intellect and from knowledge?

Hearts on fire

We’re moving from water to fire…feel that transition viscerally, in your imagination and in your senses. Close your eyes – rain falls heavy and steady, but it’s slowing now, fading to a drizzle. The sun returns, softly at first, then brightly.

Leo loves to be appreciated and is an idealist at heart. Although on the outside he appears very confident, Leo holds himself to very high standards and can be quite self-conscious when imbalanced. When balanced, the lion is humble and self-aware. Leo is a fixed sign. I feel that this modality is routinely misunderstood in the lion realm. Leo often appears self-righteous, but it’s really just in the delivery. This is where we see the intransigence of the fixed modality in its full manifestation. We also see this when Leo enters an argument. He comes armed with what he considers to be “the facts.” Leo does not like to be wrong and thus spends too much time on the defense when imbalanced. When balanced, the lion is hardworking and intensely driven to succeed. However, it is difficult to imagine this if you happen to catch Leo in what I like to call cat-mode. Leo loves to sleep in and be lazy for looong periods of time. A common leonine fantasy is to live a life of wealth and luxury, doing nothing but lounging.

For this transit I suggest a ritual such as a bonfire or sacred burning. Allow yourself to find joy in the symbolic qualities of this beloved element. Fire burns away everything that no longer serves us. Fire energy is inherently liberating. You can and must reject doubt, insecurity and fear. Fire does not reflect. It simply moves. No thoughts or questions now as to whether or not you have become – you are. We’re moving down the line of chakras, now centered at the heart. Get out of your moodspace, allow your sensitivities to rest. Be firm in your sense of Self. Step with confidence.

If you are a Cancer, now comes your Solar Return.

Lunar cycle

The Sun in Cancer marks the kickoff for the coming month and the official end of the mercurial Gemini cycle. I feel invigorated and inspired, and I hope all of you do as well. Energy in the twin realm is fast, light and bright. This year’s Gemini season heralded much change and heartbreak, but it was lovely for precisely that reason: change is good. Now we move to Cancer, the goddess-mother of the zodiac. Prepare for life to slow again over the next few weeks. In classic astrology Cancer is associated with home and family. The crab is a remarkably sensitive and intuitive creature who prefers to stick around what is familiar to her. Cancers are attracted to creative and healing fields. When imbalanced, the crab is irrational, clingy, stubborn and emotionally unstable. Cancer is the first of the water signs in the zodiac realm. Generally speaking, signs that come early in the line-up struggle with the fundamentals. Out of all the signs, Cancer is one of the least likely to break out of old habits/patterns/comfort zones.

Cancer is ruled by the Moon, my favorite celestial body. Due to her lunar nature, the crab morphs frequently. Imbalanced Cancers are typically moody and overly susceptible to change. I have exceptional empathy for the crab as I have abundant Cancer energy in my own chart. I see Cancers as romantic beings at their core. I love the way the crab surrenders to the tides of her own heart with total abandon.

We have moved thus far from the lava flow of Aries to the cooling, hardening stage of Taurus, and then to Gemini to break it all apart. Watch the pieces land once more in the ocean of Cancer: a cosmic tale of death and rebirth in the first stage of the zodiac realm.

The axis of stability

Studying the polarities of the zodiac wheel is an effective method to learn more about the signs. You may recall that Capricorn is Cancer’s opposite sign, 180 degrees across on the wheel. Cancer is Capricorn’s powerful divine feminine predecessor; together they create the axis of stability. Although we must appreciate both ends of the spectrum, I believe it is even more imperative that we focus on regaining balance between feminine and masculine energies on our planet. We can all agree that there is indeed a serious imbalance between yin and yang on Earth as we know it today. Patriarchal institutions, ruled by Capricorn, have caused much violence and misery. It is time - and has been for thousands of years - that we destroy that which is destroying. Let us return to Ishtar and Shakti. I am speaking in particular to the divine men among us, for without you, this mission is not possible.

The qualities of the crab are severely undervalued in society. Cancer is clairvoyant, full of premonitions and mysticism. She lives fearlessly in the flow of energy all around us. Balanced Cancers are so in tune that they are often psychic. Cancer rules the breasts, breastbone, stomach, digestive system, womb and pancreas. A nice parallel can be drawn here to one of the five yogic prana vayus known as samana. One way to visualize samana is a spiral moving inward, located at the solar plexus, or manipura chakra. Soon I will have a page dedicated to all of the prana vayus. For now, this tidbit from the Yoga Sanctuary: “[S]amana vayu governs agni, the digestive fire, or fire of purification … It is responsible for the processing and assimilation of all that is taken in—food, emotions, perceptions, and breath. Samana is used to assimilate these energies so that they can be used optimally.”

Guiding waters

We’re still practically at the beginning of the the zodiac wheel with the first rains falling on the springtime seeds of the soul’s forest floor. Air to water…feel that transition viscerally, in your imagination and in your senses. Close your eyes - a strong wind is blowing in from all directions, but it’s slowing now, fading into nothing. Raindrops come, softly at first, and then frantically.

Cancer is a cardinal sign, a go-to for matters of the heart and spirit. She asks us to be empathic above all else. During the Cancer cycle, this objective may easily be taken to the extreme. For those who are already greatly affected by the energy of others, it is even more crucial now to maintain your bubble. Before leaving home or transitioning from one place to another, visualize a large luminous white egg enveloping your body. Fortifying your field allows you to exercise empathy without taking on any anger, sadness, etc that does not belong to you. When our defenses are weak, this is when we unintentionally/unknowingly absorb negative energies. These little seeds slip by without detection and become entrenched in our own psyche. So deft are they that it becomes difficult if not impossible in the end to sort out what’s ours and what’s not.

For this transit I suggest rituals involving water. Allow yourself to find joy in the symbolic qualities of this beloved element. Water washes away everything that no longer serves us. Water is reflective, forgiving, supportive. Water energy does not adhere to the laws of timespace. Spend ample time moongazing and prepare for a potent full moon! We’re moving down the line of chakras from the throat to the heart. Get out of the mind, allow it to rest. Be firm in your sense of Self. Step with confidence. You are propelled now by an unseen force. Let’s continue building for the year ahead. We still have wiggle room and countless new opportunities knocking.

If you are a Gemini, now comes your Solar Return. With the Sun in Taurus for the last month, the energy around us was rather forceful. Yes, the bull can be graceful and supple like a tender young branch, but she’s a fighter deep down. It’s hard for Taurus to be loose and flexible. Internally, the bull is a geometric assemblage of hard edges and rough emotions. Life appears to her as short, uncomplicated and rather harsh. Taurus energy is slow, sweet and meandering, but perhaps the last month felt too slow. Prepare for life to pick up considerably over the next few weeks. Gemini epitomizes mutable energy.

Mercurial cycle

The Sun in mutable air sign Gemini marks the kickoff for the coming month and the official end of the Venusian cycle. Once again, I am personally exhausted. This last month was draining. I look forward to the return of mercurial energy in our skies. Gemini: the intellect, social butterfly and insatiable soul. In classic astrology Gemini is associated with communication, writing, speech and duality. This sign has an incredible amount of mental energy which usually spills over and manifests as fidgeting or nervous tics. Many Geminis are writers, poets and artists. When imbalanced, this sign is overly talkative, flighty or indecisive. Gemini is the first of the air signs in the zodiac realm, and generally speaking, signs that come early in the line-up struggle with the fundamentals. Out of all the signs, Gemini is undoubtedly the least calm. Let’s cultivate stillness in this upcoming cycle.

Gemini requires massive stimulation. You may find yourself juggling many interests, relationships and endeavors at once. What’s ironic is that Geminis themselves are often poor jugglers. You’d think otherwise, as the Gemini essence is pure quicksilver, but it seems that control and stability are hard to come by in the twin realm. This is why Geminis have a reputation for inconsistency. But this is how the twins operate - constantly in motion, always changing. We have moved thus far from the lava flow of Aries to the cooling, hardening stage of Taurus, and now we take a hammer and break it all apart. Watch the ashes lift with the wind, mingling and swirling like tiny birds, only to land once more in the ocean of Cancer: a cosmic tale of death and rebirth in the first stage of the zodiac realm.

The axis of knowledge

Studying the polarities of the zodiac wheel is an effective method to learn more about the signs. You may recall that mutable fire Sagittarius is Gemini’s opposite sign, 180 degrees across on the wheel. Gemini is Sagittarius’ crude yet vibrant predecessor; together they create the axis of knowledge. Whereas the centaur finds it difficult to focus intently on one thing, the twins tend to obsess. Gemini likes to linger, to hone in, to chase a thought and pin it down until nothing more can be extracted. Sagittarius wanders freely, dashing here and there, excitedly exploring, but the imbalanced Gemini stops and stutters, spins backwards, gets caught in hundreds of turbines, then does it all again. Our greatest challenge now is to emulate the centaur by taking an interest in that which is far away, physically or otherwise – anything that draws us out, away from home base. Speak your mind freely, spontaneously, fully, truthfully. Resist the fear of appearing unintellectual.

Geminis have a knowing, especially in the eyes. The twins are cunning, extremely intelligent, embodying a sort of sharp, swift energy. When balanced, Geminis are extraordinarily charming. Unlike any other sign in the realm, the twins have a way of communicating that instantly puts others at ease. This is where Gemini shines, in his ability to make others feel valued, supported and respected. The twins are endlessly curious, chatty and analytical. You may notice that even the pace with which you speak increases now. I hope that you will enjoy all the new friendships and excitable conversations that are about to enter your life. Outgoing though we may be, trust can be hard to earn now. The twins are certainly expert at meeting and chatting up strangers, but imbalanced Geminis are picky and struggle to form close, long-term relationships.

Winds of change

We’re still practically at the beginning of the the zodiac wheel, the first spring winds blowing seedlings around the soul’s forest floor. Earth to air…feel that transition viscerally, in your imagination and in your senses. For example: when I say “lemon,” you might instantly visualize bright yellow, a waxy rind, and your tongue may even constrict with imagined sourness. Now when I say EARTH, feel how it is damp, heavy, bursting with nutrients. Lay down in the mud. Now visualize this earth drying as a strong wind blows in from all directions: cool, gentle, tantalizingly refreshing. Lift your face to this breeze. Close your eyes, take a deep inhale. Feel your heart beating, breath drawing in. Smell the faraway scent of flowers embedded in these winds of change.

Indeed, I used to think of the Gemini soul as adventurous and adaptable, but I see now that this is often not the case. The twins have a comfort zone that they don’t particularly like to leave, simply because it is difficult for them to do so. These types easily become trapped in the mind. The Gemini vibration resembles a gyroscopic electrical storm. To alleviate interminably circling thoughts, the twins never sit still and feel cagey when they must. Ideal socioscapes now are those such as airports, train/bus stations, huge cities, clubs, packed bars, malls, public squares, etc - anywhere you can get lost in a crowd and perhaps become someone else. Gemini thrives on anonymity, fantasies, stranger danger, chameleon acts and endless traveling. Many with strong Gemini energy make odd first impressions – often they will not say anything or appear to ignore everyone! This is because they are feeling everything out with a quiet intensity. The ultimate Gemini dream is that someone will magically understand and appreciate this silence.

You may now frequently change appearances or take on new personas, even on a daily basis. A common fantasy is to travel the world and become a new person at each destination. Gemini also loves puzzles, word games, anything that honors proficiency in writing, reading or speaking. When playing games, expect to be unusually fast and witty. If imbalanced, it will be very difficult to calm down and be in the present moment. The mind wants to wander. All of this mental energy comes in very handy in academic or professional settings! If you can focus for long enough, you will absorb information quickly and systematically. Gemini is expert at processing new data and finding out where it fits. Be firm in your sense of Self. Step with confidence. You are propelled now by an unseen force. Let’s continue building for the year ahead. We still have wiggle room and countless new opportunities knocking. Namaste.

Sun in Taurus ☼ Apr 20, 2015

The Sun transits Taurus from April 20 – May 21

Click here to learn about the Sun. Click here to learn about Taurus.

If you are a Taurus, this is your Solar Return. With the Sun in cardinal fire Aries for the last month, the Universe aimed to achieve the same end by one of two means: by capitalizing on the self-confidence you built over the last astrological year to move forward with exciting plans, effectively laying the groundwork for another spectacular year; or by smashing your face in the proverbial ditch, forcing you to get your act together right here, right now. As predicted, it felt like being thrown on a treadmill flying top speed. Aries energy is a punch in the gut, a flash of sun in the eyes, a rough landing, a vicious fight; the ram wanted to test our strength and level of preparedness. Prepare now for life to slow considerably over the next few weeks.

The Venusian cycle

The Sun in fixed earth sign Taurus marks the kickoff for the coming month and the official end of the Aries/Martian cycle. I am personally exhausted. This last month has been brutal. I am looking forward to the return of Taurus energy in our skies. The Taurus cycle is the framework; the basement bricks; the iron skeleton. It is time now to fortify and solidify. Balanced Taureans are slow, in a sweet, meandering kind of way. The bull moves patiently, with diligence and focus. She is loyal, stubborn and indulgent, perhaps bordering on hedonistic. Taurus draws power from green, blue and brown. Find solace now in the verdant leaves of springtime glory, in the majesty of rich, wet soil and the squirming buzzing jangling of birds, worms and humans emerging at last from winter’s cold shell.

Wabi sabi

Studying the polarities of the zodiac wheel is an effective method to learn more about the signs. You may recall that fixed water Scorpio is Taurus’ opposite sign, 180 degrees across on the wheel. Scorpio energy is piercing, probing, unrelenting. Taurus is Scorpio’s crude yet radiant predecessor. It’s not that Taureans are simple-minded, although they can be when imbalanced, but rather that the bull recognizes, from deep within the soul, that one of life’s greatest joys is wabi sabi. I have only recently become acquainted with this Japanese term - what does it mean? Wabi sabi is the feeling that arises in consciousness when we are at peace and in balance with our surroundings. It emanates from the divine simplicity and beauty of nature. Wabi sabi is like sharing a cup of hot tea with a friend in silence.

The Taurus cycle aims to make you feel at home. I expect that this transit will be gentle, nurturing and comforting. However, for those who are imbalanced, the bull may unremittingly nudge you in unsavory directions. When her horns aren’t screwed on straight, the bull is picky and intransigent. For the Aries cycle, I recommended getting tough to make it through, and it’s not really over yet, so hang in there. Here’s what I’m going to suggest now: allow yourself to relax. Don’t be disappointed if your plans didn’t pan out the way you wanted. We’re still in a primordial period, and you have infinite time and space to change, recreate and rebuild. Accept and surrender. Take a deep breath - yes, right now!

Channeling fixed energy

Under the influence of the fixed modality, we are either obstinate or unstoppable. The trick to working with Taurus energy is making sure you’re on the right path. The bull is detail-oriented and particular. She will not shower you with udderly abundance unless your goals and ambitions are ever so precisely aligned with your higher Self. There is no room here for ill-defined purpose. We must be ruthlessly clear and direct about what we’d like to accomplish. If you are indeed synchronized with what the Universe has in mind for you, expect bounty and peace. Imagine riding on the broad back and shoulders of a giant, silky mahogany cow as she ambles leisurely through a sunlit meadow in late spring. Her strength and resilience are remarkable, staggering, unprecedented. Plant this in your heart. Feel the warmth and power of the bull blossom in your own body. Her basic nature is tranquil, still. Surround yourself with pleasant sensations and aromas to best harness Taurean energy.

We’re still practically at the beginning of the the zodiac wheel, watching the first seedlings pop up from the soul’s freshly burned forest floor. Fire to earth…feel that transition viscerally, in your imagination and in your senses. Here’s what I mean, for example: when I say “lemon,” you instantly visualize bright yellow, a waxy rind; your tongue may even constrict as you imagine sourness. Now when I say FIRE, feel the heat on your skin, see the bright flames licking the sky - what else? Fan it, let it leap and grow, let it fill your entire consciousness. Now put out the flames with heaps of earth: cold to the touch, bursting with nutrients. Sink your fingers into this earth. Close your eyes, slowly lay down. Feel your heart beating, your breath drawing in. Smell the pungent soil with delight.

Grow your roots

Taurus pushes and forces. Yes, she can be graceful and supple like a tender young branch when balanced, but she’s a fighter deep down. It’s hard for her to be loose and flexible. Internally, the bull is a geometric assemblage of hard edges and rough emotions. Life appears to her as short, uncomplicated and rather harsh. The imbalanced bull puts her roots down too early or in the wrong spot because she is too stubborn to try harder, to explore, to consider other options. But the bull who can resist this lazy impulse carries her weight uphill, huffing and puffing. She refuses to settle, even when it would be “easier” to do so, even though it might bring temporary relief and satisfaction. So keep climbing, even while your pack grows heavier by the day and your legs weaker, wobblier. You will make it.

Let’s continue building for the year ahead. We still have wiggle room and countless new opportunities knocking. Taurus will help you transform your ideas into manifest reality. The bull is raw, physical, real. She is here now to mold and shape your life. Earth energy grounds and centers. Stretch out on your back beneath the sunshine. Intertwine your fingers and toes in the grass. Bury your nose in a flower. Open your eyes to what is. Let the first rays of light wash and absolve you. Let us feast together on springtime plenty. Be firm in your sense of Self. Step with confidence. You are propelled now by an unseen force. Namaste.

Sun & Super Solar Eclipse in Aries ♈ Mar 20, 2015

The Sun transits Aries from March 20 - April 20. The Super New Moon Solar Eclipse in Aries comes exact on March 20 at 5:36 am EST.

Click here to learn about the Sun, the Moon or Aries: The Ram

Disclaimer: when talking about Sun signs, it’s really more accurate to say “the Earth’s relation to the Sun” since the Earth is the one moving. An appropriate name for this much-celebrated, often oversimplified astrological element would therefore be “Earth Sign.” Remember – you embody a whole soup of planets!

If you are an Aries, this is your Solar Return. The Sun moves into the realm of the fiery ram on the same day that the New Moon Solar Eclipse in Aries rises dark and silent in the sky. This one is a Supermoon – yes, even New Moons qualify – because, according to Richard Nolle’s definition, it occurs “…with the moon at or near (within 90% of) its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit.” (This phenomenon is also known as perigee.) And yes, we had one last month too (Sun and Supermoon in Pisces). And YES, it’s also the first Solar Eclipse since 2013 AND the Spring Equinox. The eclipse will only be visible to a select few here on Earth - check out this page from Space.com to learn more.

Every New Moon falls in the same sign as that of the Sun as this is precisely what makes it a New Moon. With the Sun in mutable water Pisces for the last month, our attention was directed toward matters of the spirit. I find that the Pisces cycle is actually quite arduous because it incites turmoil in the psyche. Life felt sweet and dreamlike at times, and at others was fraught with indecision, incommunicable frustration and inexplicable moodiness. Prepare for life to pick up considerably over the next few weeks.

The Martian cycle

The New Moon in cardinal fire sign Aries marks the kickoff for the coming month and the official end of the Piscean/Neptunian cycle. Needless to say, the combination of Supermoon + Solar Eclipse + Equinox + New Moon energies pack a serious punch. But the cherry on top is really the fact that it’s all going down in the sign of Aries. Balanced Aries are incredibly outgoing, self-determined and energetic. Aries energy is fresh like morning dew, sharp as a sword and fearless as the warrior running headfirst into battle. Imbalanced Aries energy is reckless, aggressive and impulsive. I’ve had to really watch my mouth lately! For those who normally have trouble keeping cool, prepare to be tested. We have to try harder than ever now to be patient, compassionate and tactful. Aries energy emanates from the Self - it’s easy now to get stuck in the raging fires of the ego. Those flames will be leaping and multiplying with unprecedented vigor!

Proud of you

Studying the polarities of the zodiac wheel is an effective method to learn more about the signs. You may recall that cardinal air Libra is Aries’ opposite sign, 180 degrees across on the wheel. Libra encourages us to share, cooperate and compromise. Aries, first sign of the realm, is Libra’s crude yet dazzling predecessor. It’s not that Aries are utterly self-absorbed, although they can be when imbalanced, but rather that the ram knows, from deep within the soul, that one of life’s greatest joys comes from taking pride in the Self. When I visualize Aries, I see a blood red flower blooming over and over from the base of the spine up to the head; the flower emanates heat, generates life, creates endlessly. Yet we must find a balance. Yes, I want to walk around with total confidence, boldly expressing my truest Self, and yes, I also want to make sure I’m giving, being considerate of others and learning how to live and take part in a community. Aries burns through space with a brightness that has the power to blind even the Self while Libra travels calmly and with purpose, ironing out all the wrinkles left by the ram’s swift, impatient hooves.

The Aries cycle aims to achieve the same end by one of two means: by capitalizing on the self-confidence we’ve built over the last astrological year to move forward with exciting plans, effectively laying the groundwork for another spectacular year; or by smashing your face in the proverbial ditch, forcing you to get your act together right here, right now because time’s run out and there’s nowhere left to go, my friend. Don’t be surprised if it feels like the Universe throws you on a treadmill flying top speed and screams RUN. Prep time’s over - the exam starts now. Aries energy is like a punch in the gut, a flash of sun in the eyes, a rough landing, a vicious fight; the ram only cares how strong and prepared you are. For the Pisces cycle, I recommended relaxing into the process so that you could more easily find the sunshine, but I’m going to suggest exactly the opposite now: it’s time to get tough.

Channeling cardinal energy

Under the influence of Aries cardinal energy we feel invincible. This cycle presents yet another opportunity to hit the restart button: your blank sheet of paper, New Year’s resolution, second chance. Passion and ambition link arms now. We are direct, focused and extraordinarily driven. Pain and suffering burn away in the face of Aries’ insistence on LIFE and HAPPINESS and MOVEMENT. This is it! You can let it all go now! Drop it into the belly of the blaze, watch it disappear in a column of sparkling orange smoke. Just when it seems that there will never be any method to the madness, the Universe comes along and grabs you full force by the ears: wake up! All of your progress will be illuminated now. Final results await you. First? First we have to run up this motherfuckin mountain.

We’re at the beginning of the the zodiac wheel, watching crimson fire ravage our soul forests. None of us will pass through this cycle without having to work - no, things will not just “fall into place.” Both Aries and Libra have demanding roles to play. The hard truth is that we must learn to love the Self before we can really love or support another. And you know what? It’s difficult, it’s so damn difficult, learning how to love yourself. That’s what the ram is really here to do. For so many, this is the defining quest. This is the journey of all journeys.

Burnin’ up

If Pisces is the last breath, Aries is the first. Did you know that the force with which newborns take their first breath exceeds our deepest inhale by tenfold? That first breath must be powerful enough to rip open the bronchial pathways for the very first time. The natural changes and endings heralded by the Pisces cycle were designed with something inconceivably magnificent in mind. Watch now as the Universe unveils that magnificence. You are in control. This is where the pen first touches the page; where the planets form; where the dust settles to reveal a space that is both empty and full. Recognize this cycle as a primordial period. This is only the beginning, the first clay molding. Do not attempt to create and analyze simultaneously.

What do you envision for the year ahead? With Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus respectively occupying each of the fire signs, this is a sublime occasion to ask for whatever we really want. Open from root to crown, chakras reenergized, raring to go. Fire energy is inherently liberating. You can and must reject doubt, insecurity and fear. Fire does not reflect. It simply moves. No thoughts or questions now as to whether or not you have become - you are. Balanced Aries are as humble as they are enthusiastic. The ram has the heart of a visionary. I expect that this transit will feel like the sunrise that follows a long night of grief. We’re all about to dance ecstatically upon the hearth of Life’s sacred fire. Here you are free to be yourself and no one else. Fill the dark sky with your light. You are being lifted now by an unseen force. Namaste.
